the thing is I'm just getting started by trying to view whats on the dvd before i capture it...was hoping i could capture it from the dvd player like i do with the usual dvd discs however my dvd player can't read it and so is the dvd player of my mac. do i need the source camera to do that or is there any shop who can transfer video from 2.8gb dvd's to the normal dvd?

One way of doing it is to use an external tray-loading DVD drive and a program like DVDxDV.
EDIT: If you can't even play the DVD on your regular DVD player, make sure that the disc has been "finalized" by the source camera.

@PatrickGaerlan
I did just what you suggested. It appears the project wasn't "finalized" yet. I was told that dvd+rw need no finalization so lesson #1...next time use dvd+rw for dvd handycams so u can view it immediately. I finally and successfully captured it using dvd player thru a firewire. Now I can start editing with fcp.
Thanks again! You were all a big help.... :-)
