DVD done in iDVD4 incompatible with VLC?

I have made some home video and lecture videos in imovie and then had it burned and rendered using iDVD4.

It plays well with DVD players (appliances) but when I used VLC instead of DVD player (software), the video is okay BUT....
the sound is not heard, sort of it is distorted.

Has anyone tried their DVD creation in VLC and experienced the same?

Any fix on this? settings in iDVD or in VLC?
