If you have OS Tiger, Grab is one of your utilities.

Use Grab utility in your Applications--->Utilities--->Grab--->Capture menu---Selection.

tried that but it results in a bad image, usually looking like i paused the video in midmotion. can this be done with what i've got or is more software needed?

    thanks, though, renzo

Maybe its your video, if it's pixelized then you can't do much.
I captured movie frames in quicktime and used it as a title screens in Toast 7 dvd menus.

perhaps coz the scene has a lot of motion to begin with. ill try it on another part of the movie with less motion.

I've never attempted this but have you tried doing a capture while the movie is paused?

Pause the movie first then screen capture it, less blur, better results

You can use Quicktime to move forward and backward one frame at a time, just use the left and right arrow keys.

to play a vcd in quicktime, explore the cd, open the folder named "MPEGAV" then look for the .dat file, open it with quicktime and there you have it. if it still doesn't work, you need to download a player like VLC, you can get a copy in www.versiontracker.com, it's freeware. in extracting a clip from a vcd or dvd, i think there are some freeware DVD-rip utilities in versiontracker.com, just browse under the multimedia category or do a search on dvd/vcd rippers.
