Default Can\'t play AVI files in new Quicktime

Recently got some AVI files that I tried playing in Quicktime and it refuses to play. It also reports that it tried to download some component from the QT website that couldn't be found.

Is this a new disability of the new update?

It occurs to me that I've actually never played AVI files in QT, using VLC instead, so I can't say if this feature was unavailable since the beginning. Was trying to use Toast to convert it the AVI file to a VCD, but it apparently needs QT to convert the file.

    Anyone know anything about this?

Adel, if you haven't done so yet, try installing one of the DivX/MPEG-4 codecs available for the Mac: DivX 5.1.1 or 3ivx D4 4.5.1. Or just download and install both. :-)

The codecs will be installed in your Library -> Quicktime folder.

    Hope this works!

And/or you can convert the AVI files into the more Quicktime-friendly .mov files using DivX Doctor II. Here's the VersionTracker link for more info:

    Hope this also helps.

Muchas gracias, Henjie. It did work. I'd forgotten that I've installed the codecs in a previous configuration. After a reformat/reinstall I kept on using VLC and didn't know I hadn't installed it for the new QT. 3ivx did the trick. That is freeware, right? I know Divx isn't.

Yup, 3ivx is freeware. There's also a free DivX codec which doesn't include the encoder, only the decoder. The decoder is what's needed to play the files anyway. :-)
