    Default Avid Media Composer 7.2

A production unit based in U.S. donated their old Avid Media Composer 7.2 system to my group. Aside from the Avid hardware, the donation includes a Power Macintosh 9600 and an external storage disk.

We've been using Final Cut Pro for almost two years now and we are quite knowledgeable with this application.

At the moment, wala kaming idea kung paano gamitin itong Avid. May kasama naman itong manual and other documentation pero excited na kami to know more about this system. The donation will arrive in a few weeks.

Is there anyone in here familiar with this system? In case meron, may S-video or composite input and output ba ito? Alam ko may component input and output ito pero we do'nt have a betacam deck. All our tapes are in Mini-DV format. What else should we expect? We are really excited.

    Thanks.

Composite output/input? It should be, the last time i used it. It's a good machine..... but dont expect to be faster. And its running on OS 7.2 or 8..... so medyo vintage na yan.hehehe. have fun )

I've been the sole technical support provider for a local Avid reseller for almost seven(7) years. I lived and breathed Avid. Ask darthmaul

What you're getting is what's called the ABVB-based Avid. It's a 9600 with the ABVB (Avid Broadcast Video Boardset).

The version 7.x of Media Composer runs on Mac OS 7.6.1 to 8.x depending on the exact hardware revisions and exact Software version.

Depending on the model you're getting, you'll either have the following video INs and OUTs:

    1. Analog Component (Y, R-Y, B-Y), and Composite

    OR

    2. SDI (Serial Digital Interface)

    but NOT both.

    Other things you might get:

Pinnacle Alladin 3D Effect Module OR the Genie 3D Effects board, again not both.

You will also either have 4-channel audio or the 8-channel audio IO.

Like darthmaul said, don't expect it to be as fast as a G5 (or a G4 or a G3)

But you can get a maximum of 2 video layers realtime when using 3:1 video compression.

Just a word of caution when you get the system:
    1. Do NOT touch the Mac OS
    2. Do NOT update QuickTime
    3. Do NOT upgrade any hardware in the CPU arbitrarily
    4. Do NOT move the boards on another Mac expecting it to run
    5. Do NOT install any software on it especially those that run in memory in the background (i.e. Norton, Antivirus utilities, etc.)
    6. Did I mention NOT touching the Mac OS?
    7. Keep the IT guy away from the machine

    8. CONSULT THE "RELEASE NOTES"

I can say this much. Regardless of it's age, that specific family of Media Composers are true workhorses and are the most stable and easiest to maintain. It's an _editing_ machine and not "really" for _compositing_

There are still a number of those babies earning real money in the Philippines today.

U2U or e-mail me direct if you need some help.
