Sports Shooters: Lines we say or hear during games
Lines that we say or hear during games...
"#$%!#$%!#$%#$ Ref, tabi!" (In English: $%$@#%#@$ Ref, get your @$$ out of my view!)
Point-guard leads the break. He takes off for a layup but dishes at the last minute to a trailing teammate. Teammate finishes with a jam. "Pare, kuha mo yon?
"Anong ISO mo?" - Often asked right before opening tip.
"Magkano bili mo diyan?"
I heard this during the last Ateneo vs La Salle game: "Pahiram naman lente. Kung kelangan mo na, yan naman ang hiramin ko sayo (pointing to a 70-200mm 2.8L)."
"Pare, sit still. Pakuha lang ng white balance sa medyas mo."
Mgd with a wide yesteday at Adamon: "Pare ikaw na bahala sa close-up."
"Anong jersey natin? Light o dark?"
"%@#$%@#$ Ang dilim naman dito! (referring to the lighting at the makati colliseum)
Hahaha ikaw bagwis ha, lagi mo kong kinukunan kahit sa video!
Uy a usual line I hear- "Iba talaga ang 24-70L f/2.8, hayup yang si Al meron nun!"
When a fellow photographer stands up- "Change location!" (Good luck though in securing a place in major games in Araneta) So another line "Reserve ako dyan ha!"
As Nono pointed out, a line that's always running in my head but I never say it- "Walang hiyang REF yan, tinakpan na naman yung view ko!"
And during the UE vs DLSU game, from the mid-court a shot was attempted just before the end of half-time, ako naman nagfofocus sa player didn't realize the ball was going straight my way missing the backboard...kabuuush! :dead: Straight to the Tamron 28-75 f2/8, camera slipped off my hand luckily naka Optech strap around my neck, which held the 20D off the ground. I was too concerned about my gear to notice any pain...buti all still working! Vic started the line - "Are you ok?" Then I heard this from other photogs and sideline people too.

Hahaha I swear, Ditoy, everyone on the sidelines winced when they saw the ball connect with your camera. There was an audible gasp!
Count me in for the usual "ref, urong!!" and "wow! did anyone get that shot?!" comments, but hey, since we're on the topic, I'd like to ask the other shooters what your pregame rituals are, if any?
While waiting for a typical Araneta game to start, I almost always do the following checklist for good luck, or just out of habit.
- format all my CF cards, even if they're already formatted
- say hi to Manny Salgado, DLSU team manager, and shake his hand ... a pregame ritual we started in 2002
- take off my Op/tech strap, all lens caps, and anything else that might get in the way of an emergency lens change and stuff them all in my bag til after the game
- go to the bathroom near the dugouts to make sure I won't need to go during the game
- say hi to Al Neri if he's around the ABS-CBN van
- give my regards to the army of Atenean photogs if it's an AdMU game (i.e. nono, ditoy, jake, philip, aaron, etc)
- check to make sure my return ticket for the MRT is somewhere I won't lose it
- find a seat near the DLSU goal if possible, but if it's a really big and crowded game where I won't be able to switch sides at halftime, I usually opt to pick the side where DLSU will finish the game
- text my wife/dad/sis/friends or anyone else watching the game and ask where they are so I can snap a shot of them later on
- remind myself that I'm lucky enough to have one of the best seats in the house!
My pre-game "rituals" are similar to yours Vic, except that I clean my lenses too and shoot my Whibal cards in a few spots on the court.
Oh and another thing. I also call the house and make sure they are taping the game. Why? So that when I get home, I get to watch what I could not see behind the lens.

Oh, and I heard this last year: "Pare, may extra batt ka? BP-511?"

That's so true. Many times after a game, my friends or family will ask me about a certain play or certain questionable call and I often have to answer, "You know what? I have no idea what happened there!"
It's strange but true; we can see so much of the court from our vantage points and yet we so so little of what actually goes on because we're constantly looking through a little glass window an inch wide.
Jha, we would love to use ceiling-mounted strobes, but unfortunately, we can't
At the big dome, ambient light is enough for 1/250 at F/2.8 using ISO 800. At Ultra and Cuneta, just about the same. At the Blue Eagle Gym, ISO goes up to 1600, at Makati Colliseum, worse.
I have a habit of not using flash as much as I can.
