Hi, im about to embark on pro photography sessions. Just wondering what would be the best between Sony and nikon? There are both 8 megapixel cameras that are locally available, any thoughts?

    Thanks

Are you looking for a DSLR? I suppose so if you're taking photography lessons...

If so, then am not sure if Sony makes DSLR's though. Canon and Nikon would be your best bet.

If you're looking for a DSLR, you have no choice but go Nikon. AFAIK, Sony doesn't manufacture DSLR's although they supply sensors for Nikon and some other manufacturers.

Is it advisable to start with film first before going digital? Thanks!

Not if you're going digital anyway.

    Sony does not have DSLR.

Canon, Epson, Fuji, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sigma sell '35mm'-sized body DSLR.

Mamiya will soon have a couple of models for medium format DSLR.

Hasselblad & Contax (R.I.P.) have digital backs available for their respective 645 AF system.

And then, hehehehe..., there's the 8x10 large format fitted with a stripped flat-bed scanner.

Which Sony model or Nikon Model are you looking at?

It may help you also if you tell us your budget on getting a camera.
