Primer On Photographic Lighting by Jay Alonzo on May 7
The Alcove Photo Gallery opens its batch of workshops this May with
PRIMER ON PHOTOGRAPHIC LIGHTING by Jay Alonzo on May 7, 2005 (9:00
a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue,
Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across The Peninsula Manila). Our Primer
on Lighting workshop is a pioneering course in the local photography
scene, and is dedicated solely to the discussion of lighting concepts
and techniques.
This one-day seminar will cover the basics of lighting, with added
emphasis on using artificial light sources. This course aims to
reduce the complexity of light and illumination to a learnable level,
and to show its application in photographing specific subjects. It
will allow the students to:
· Learn the fundamental principles of lighting and its importance to
creating better photographs
· Master the primary controllable characteristics of light and see
how it applies to photographic lighting
· Know the different lighting tools used in-studio and on-location,
and how to use them to achieve the lighting results that you want
· Master the systematic way of setting up lighting using artificial
light sources
· Be able to "read" lighting conditions especially during on-location
shoots, and be able to optimize your shooting workflow/method for
best lighting design and exposure
· Have a practical session applying the fundamental controllable
characteristics of light in setting up artificial lighting
The workshop will benefit professional and non-professional
photographers who want to improve their photography through the
skillful use of lighting. This seminar is not only intended as a
primer in using artificial light, but also in using natural light
when taking pictures.
Requirement
· Basic working knowledge on photography, particularly about exposure
setting; or have at least taken Photo 101 or Digital Photography 101
· Optional – a camera with manual exposure control, exposure meter
(preferably with flash exposure mode)
About The Lecturer
Jay Alonzo personally designed the structure and contents of this
workshop, after realizing the lack of emphasis on the in-depth
discussion of lighting design and control in most local photo
classes, and the lack of short courses that particularly deal with
photographic lighting. As such, Jay, in partnership with the Alcove
Photo Gallery, first introduced the Primer on Lighting course in the
summer of 2002.
Jay started his teaching career in 1996, and has conducted seminars
for the Technology & Livelihood Resource Center, DBP Camera Club,
Procter & Gamble, Caltex Philippines, Microsoft Philippines and
Meralco Mountaineers among others. A pro photographer
outside the classroom, most of his projects are focused on the local
movie/entertainment, hotel, resort and restaurant industries. He also
does regular shoots for Businessday and Mabuhay magazine, the in-
flight magazine of Philippine Airlines.
Workshop fee is P1,200 (inclusive of handouts, equipment use and
certificate). Limited slots only. For more details, please call
