    Default microdrives

guys, im going to get a dslr within the next few days and i also have to get a compact flash 2 card with it. is it recommended to get a micro drive? what size and brand is good? if not, is the sandisk brand good? also, would anyone be going to hidalgo soon? i might need to buy my cf there. finally, where can i buy white lenses? what are good lenses to invest in? im going to get a 20D or 350D. im thinking of selling my old lenses for new ones. how much would a canon ef 75-300 mm sell? and how much does a brand new one of that length that is telephoto?

Are you going for the fastest or the biggest?

Just moved this thread to the iPix forums.

CF cards are built better, will last longer, read and write speeds are faster. Microdrives are cheaper per mb, but they are like hard drives, more prone to shock damage-failure and consume more battery life. This is a good read for you - Rob Galbraith CF Performance Database.

Sandisk is indeed a good if not the best brand, got at Mayer quiapo last novemeber around P6500 for the 1Gb Extreme if I remember correctly.

All lenses- Canon, Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina are also found in Quiapo. The Canon 75-300 P9,800, 75-300 IS P28,000 last time I checked for a friend. Sold a couple for P7000-7500 before.

Mayer 7337598, 7337722 good luck though, they're always too busy with customers to handle phone calls.

go for cf because microdrives consumes more bat power, ditoy_eagle has a good point. srp of the 20d is at 97k in ordianry stores. surely be cheaper in quiapo. spec wise the 20d is one hell of a dslr camera. best in its line i must say. unless you are going for the mark series hahahaha! but definitely you'll need more cash for the lenses. get the 75 - 300 for your tele. well when you need wide angle hehehe that will really burn your pocket. especially the fish eye.

hey is it ok to buy dslr's in quiapo? i buy accessories there but never the actual hardware. you guys think it's worth getting it there, i also want to get a 20d but quite pricey i'm kinda saving enough money so that i can make the right decision.

eh, personally, if i need 1GB, i'd buy 2 x 512MB instead. always paranoid that a CF/SD/MMC card failure would wipe out everything. and yes, it has happened to me...

I buy 80% of my photo stuff in Hidalgo. Just make sure that if you get a Canon though, get the one with the local warranty. There are grey market units with a lower price but your pocket and time will thank you in the long run when you get the local warranty units. Most if not all the shops Ditoy mentioned are official resellers of CanonMPI.

Camera bodies, lenses (although some white/L ones are by order), CFs, batteries, accessories etc can be found in Hidalgo at a lower price than in the malls.

CF vs MicroDrive? I have and use a 1GB IBM MicroDrive. Go get yourself a CF instead.

EDIT: Get a CF size that matches your PBook/iBook drive. Like me, I have a combo drive, so I use 512MB CFs so that when 1 CF is full, I just burn it to 1 CD. If I had an SD, Id probably use 1GB CFs. Ang hirap kasi mag-himay ng 1GB up CFs to burn into CDs e...

As for my buying tip. Get the best lens you can buy. Dont skimp on the lens to get the 'better' body. You will have changed your DSLR body maybe 3x already yet you still use the same lens... Go get the good lens...and just get the body that has the features you need and actually use.

Speaking of Hidalgo, can somehow please tell me how much a Canon 350D (body only) cost there? I'm not residing in the Metro Manila area but I'm planning for a trip there anytime this month. Thanks!

thanks for the tips guys. i'll go and get myself a cf card instead. is it better to have 1 gig or have 2 512? which would be more cost efficient of the 2 and which would be more convenient? actually, i have 2 lenses here with me already. i was thinking of selling both to get a new one. how much would a telephoto 75-300 mm cost? and where is a good place to get basic photography lessons? i think photoworld manila is good. the only problem with it is that its too far. Does anyone here teach basic photography?

well not all lenses fit in all cameras. sometimes it's brand specific. canon lenses are good for canon only. but i think nikon lenses can be used with other cameras too!
