    Default EOS300D Sensor Cleaning

    Hi,

I have a less than 1 month old EOS300D ... and already I get dots on the image which could be dust on the filter/sensor... tried cleaning it according to the Canon manual prescribed method . i.e. Air Pump , but just managed to add more dots

now its with Canon Service CentRE (HK kasi and theyre charging me for cleaning ...

my question : has anyone else encountered similar problems ? how do you and how often do you clean your sensor ?

to have dust in your sensor is perfectly normal. if you change lenses a lot, the more dust the sensor accumulates. i clean my d70 using an ordinary air pump. and have successfully done it a couple of times. i clean my d70 every two weeks.

What kind of Air pump you use? Is it the rubber blower?

I assume it has no local warranty here that's why it's in HK. But have you tried bringing it at the local Canon service center?

I got a 10D with a CMOS sensor similar to yours and it's been more than 1yr. Usually before the warranty expires I bring it to Canon to clean it for free. There are sensor swabs out there like Sensor Swab , but I personally recommend Canon service to do it for me for major sensor cleaning. If it's a minor dust, I use my dependable rubber blower.

yes ... I used a low-tech rubber blower ... read that compressed air cans can actually do more harm than good .

thanks for the info that canon phils cleans the sensor for free during the warranty .

yup! DON'T USE CANNED AIR! delikado dude, if you accidentally shake it while your cleaning, some residue from the cfc's inside the can will come out and will get on your sensor. I've used sensor swabs on my ahem, D 100  and it's a little hard to get in where the sensor is.

Here's a tip.. i found one of those air pumps that's used to blow air into inflatable mattresses, or swimming pools. rechargeble and it's just a strong fan with a nozzle! it works great for cleaning the sensor and lenses! no cfc's pa!

also, back in school, we jast had an airtank (scuba) filled with o2 with a nozzle fitted into it. That works well also for cleaning gear. good luck!

That's the problem with the air here in manila! it's so freaking dusty! it gets everywhere!

    Well, I'd second Milke's suggestion.

Build up a relation with the local canon service people, believe, they are very accomodating.

I have a 1D, 10D which i bought abroad, but they still help me with these minor dust issues. I say minor, because they do not charge. BUT, anything over that, may cost you a minimal amount of cash.

Believe me. I'm a convert. I'm buying my gear here. case in point - i bought a 550ex in HK which blew a circuit. these clowns in hk wanted to charge me hk$1000 to replace the part!!! a brand new 550ex would cost me around hk$1,600 ----jerks!! I brought it to canon, they replaced the busted part for Pesos 4800.00 only.

Believe me, the support that canon has shown the local market is extremely better than Nikon. No pun intended to the Nikon products, which in my opinion is very good. Local support sucks.

thanks for the suggestion manilaman ,

    talagang nakakabadtrip.
before cleaning, Canon Service called me up to report they found a very small scratch on the sensor's filter ... and they proceeded to clean the sensor/filter and now says the scratch can't be removed.
it shows up on images taken at small apertures and nasa gitna pa :wound:
now they say this is not covered by warranty because it is not a manufacturing defect but ' perhaps ' man-made.
the scratch itself is not visible without a special magnifying lens and lighting.
guess what , theyre charging me for the filter replacement.
it's my first SLR camera ... and I'm just starting on this hobby ... <sigh> hope this is just an isolated case . bilib pa naman ako sa canon
    bad trip talaga

IMHO it is only fair that Canon charge you for filter scratches that showed up after a month of using your camera. The most plausible explanation is that the filter got scratched when you tried cleaning it, unless the scratch was already there when you bought it.

will persistent use of a blower will eventually remove the dust on my sensor? or do i really need to take it to canon or uses a sensor swab? (is using a sensor swab fool(idiot) proof hehe! just in case lang naman)
