Canon 420EX owners
Hi, I just got a Canon 420EX Flash. Unfortunately, the manual is in Japanese. I know how to turn it on, fire it, etc. but can someone give me on what the more advanced features are? What do all the LEDs and switches mean/do? Newbie here, so please bare with me.
Thanks!

The numbers under the E-TTL indicator just indicate what zoom setting the flash is at. It zooms according to the lens in use so as to ensure adequate coverage yet maintain as much light as needed.
See the green dot switch? That's "Program" mode. Opposite it is High-speed sync is for taking pictures at faster than the X-Sync speed of 1/200 sec., and results in reduced flash bursts. There is also a switch at the bottom which controls whether the flash is operating stand-alone, or as a slave to a 550EX or ST-E2, and which channel it's on as a slave.
Thats about it. Most of the features are built in like IR focus assist.
You can only control flash exposure compensation by firmware hack if you're using a 300D, or through the camera body if you've got a 10D or above. Not sure if the 350D has built in controls for FEC.

My 420 EX will be arriving end of May from the U.S. I will gladly give you a photocopy of the manual. I'm sure it's in English.
If you're interested, just U2U me.
