    Default protools or logic pr0

right now im just working with reason 3.0 and ableton live.

since i dont wana go back to cakewalk sonar anymore...

im thinking of getting a new DAW.

    (hopefully soon)

im choosing between pro tools (im not familiar with the versions)

    and logic pro 7.

price? i heard logic pro is around 40-50k

i dont have any idea bout the protools

after getting the software, do i need to buy plugins?

since u already have a firewire 410... try protools m-powered... the cheapest way into a pro tools system for you...

i use logic express for my rockstar aspirations pero the learning curve is pretty steep... i actually took time to read books (which i didnt have to do when i started out with my musical interest with cakewalk). i dont think ive even gone through 1/4 of the program yet... its feature set (even with just this express that i have) is really really deeeeeeepp

if ur gna use the daw to record and arrange audio... try pro tools... but if ur gna use it do ur own electronic tracks or something with a lot of midi... synthesizers and virtual instruments... i think logic is worth learning...

when i do tracks... i usually do all the midi stuff in reason 3.
when a song needs guitar, i mixdown the reason audio then put it to ableton.then i record the guitar with the mixdown audio from reason.

when i do acapella tracks, i do it all in ableton 6.
being a resident sonar user, im kinda dependent to antares auto tuner. =) i use it to cure backup voices.

i find reason 3 very sufficient enough for my sounds...
    (only con: cannot record audio...leche)

if logic pro is worth saving... i would get it =)

pro tools is a good choice for me, cause il be able to learn the "Standard" DAW of d industry =)

i think the main selling point of logic is the vast number of plugins it already has built in. it has A LOOOOT. but if you have all the sounds, effects, virtual instruments and etc that you need in reason, i think you should just get pro tools m-powered. you'll get the audio recording that u lack. you'll learn how to use industry standard software... (the knowledge u'll gain will even carry on to protools hd systems)... you wont need to buy a new interface (protools software requires protools hardware). plus you can use rewire to integrate reason with pro tools. you should really look into this rewire thing.. which i think is also compatible with ableton... it'll save you the step of having to mixdown your reason audio and put it in ableton to put it in your song... like having the whole reason package as an entire plugin package for ur daw (thats if i understand rewire and reason correctly... ive never used reason). its suppose to directly link the two programs together sharing audio in realtime like having an actual cable run from your reason instruments and effects to protools/ableton/logic/etc.

You guys have basically discussed the advantages of these music apps- Pro Tools being a defacto standard audio recording app, and Logic being good for MIDI arranging having built-in sounds and plug-ins.

Raph has a good suggestion of getting M-Powered (P19,995 at Crystal Audio) since you already have a compatible m-audio interface. Then try out Logic Express which is also affordable.

Pro Tools HD is the high-end line, minimum configuration is around $10,000.

There are basically two flavors of pro tools
    protools LE and protools HD

the main difference of the two is that LE utilizes your main cpu to process all the audio
HD offloads the processing to digital signal processing chips
meaning... HD will handle more layers of audio with absolutely no latency

there are other differences... aside from obviously the audio interfaces that come with the systems (LE has m-box, digi 001/002/003 and HD has the 192io etc...). a lot of its limitations are relevant to audio post production for film. for example LE cant do 5.1 mixing.

as for m-powered... M-powered protools is basically Pro tools LE that is made to work with M-audio audio interfaces (as i mentioned in my earlier post, protools software requires pro tools hardware). the difference with standard protools LE and m-powered is that u cant use a few of the bundles that digidesign sells like the DVtoolkit which includes tools to mix stereo audio with videos.

For musicians... LE is more than enough for everything. Most big bands (especially locally) do all their audio recording and mixing in LE... But if u wna do serious sound design like Ditoy... HD is the way to go. but as he mentioned... HD starts at half a friggin million pesos... and LE starts at $300 (for m-powered).

ive only seen an HD system once... sir ditoy: we did the visual effects for super noypi! i was at the ignite mixing room (where i was drooling over the hd system!) a few times while roselle viewed your sound design for a few sequences. sadly, we were never introduced.

Hey small world, nice to meet you here at Philmug. Thanks for giving djmyke the details of the various Pro Tools systems. I was a Pro Tools specialist for two years with the local dealer Digital Media, Inc before going full time with my studio Sound Crew and Ignite Media.

I am also impressed that a visual guy like you know a lot about audio. Usually kasi, visual-video guys don't understand audio linggo and think that they can already do a polished final mix in the video stage. hehe

i was an aspiring musician before i got into animation hehe
but more than being into the two... im a total gear geek hehe

did u meet our white guy ted? i think he brought a project to ignite after we sorta half gave him the boot. by the way, im guessing you dont work exclusively for ignite since u have sound crew... we have a few sound design requirements and would want a quote for your services. duno if it'll make a difference going to dave or straight to you. hehe. i'll pm you.
