If you are looking for compatibility with pro studios and you do more traditional style straight recording, and if you have or are considering one of the compatible interfaces, Pro Tools might be the way to go.

If you are a composer or use software instruments (synths) to make and record music and you want to save a few bucks and don't want to be tied to Digidesign compatible hardware and plug-ins, Go with Logic Express.

If you are doing post production work specially mixing in surround, Pro Tools is the defacto standard software. Just do a google search of all hi-tech films, chances are these are done with Pro Tools. You will need a Pro Tools HD which costs a lot higher due to the top-of-the-line hardware that is bundled with it. If you will be personally investing on the equipment, this is too expensive starting at around $10,000.

Logic is more for serious Music production tasks. Though it is a lot cheaper since you just buy the software and use a third party audio interface of your choice. It is surround capable already thus a good alternative if you have limited funds.

You can view this link for good pointers on Setting up your home studio for Surround sound.
