The meaning behind a logo

Apple's logo, designed in 1977, is an apple with a bite out of it - a friendly symbol of both knowledge and anarchy, contrasted to IBM and the PC world.

Just a rebuttal... there was NO PC world yet to constrast with when the logo was created in '77.
There was IBM alright, but the era of the PC was much later ('83 in fact when IBM introduced the IBM Personal Computer).

IBM's logo is derived from the glow of phosphor CRTs when you typed IBM on them.
Coke's 'wave' logo is actually 2 original coke bottles (one inverted) side by side.

The apple bite i think came from this:

Motter Tektura
Prior to the first Macintosh, Apple used a typeface called Motter Tektura, designed by Otmar Motter of Voralberger Graphic in 1975, to accompany the Apple logo with a bite taken out of it. At the time, the typeface was considered new and modern. It was distributed by Letraset.

one of my favorite logos: (by the way, i heard from reliable sources [though yet to be confirmed] that the communications department of this institution uses Macs in their day-to-day tasks--which includes of course the concept and design of this logo)
