VFX Supervisor
The Visual Effects Supervisor works in partnership with a VFX producer to oversee the creation of effects for a project. The Supervisor is the primary creative contact with clients once a script is provided for bidding. VFX Supervisors work closely with the client in planning all of the effects and ensures that the intended aesthetic of the client is realized. They are the central person around whom a production flows, and set the tone for how a production is run. The Visual Effects Supervisor is ultimately responsible for the overall performance of visual effects - whether that means managing client expectations about what can realistically be achieved for a show’s budget, or coaching an actor on how to perform over a blue screen.
Responsibilities:
• Functions as the creative lead on a project. Supervises and directs the work of all artists on a show.
• Helps develop projects by art-directing storyboards or pre-vis animation.
• Insures that creative staff are producing work as expected, and maintains a creatively fertile environment. Gives constructive feedback and guidance.
• Supervises the photography of VFX plates, or advises the client on proper shooting methodology.
• Attends spotting sessions with the client, to review plates and clarify the creative vision for all shots before starting.
• Works with the Producer, Compositing Supervisor and 3D Animation Supervisor to conceptualize effects, develop strategies for completing them, and create budgets and schedules.
• Works with lead artists to assign shots to junior artists according to the strengths and weaknesses of individual talent, and also to distribute the workload in a fair manner.
Must have all of the qualifications of a VFX Producer, and be prepared to take over those responsibilities for small projects, as needed.
VFX Producer
The Visual Effects Producer works in partnership with the VFX Supervisor, and oversees the workflow of a project. While the Supervisor is responsible for the quality of the final images, the producer is responsible for making sure the work gets done on time and on budget. The producer protects the company interests, and makes sure that each project is profitable. He/She is the point person for handling all the financial arrangements for the show, and tracks all purchase orders, work orders, and expenses related to a project. Finally, they insure the proper and timely delivery of all temp and final effects to the client.
Responsibilities:
• Prepares materials for artist sessions, and makes sure that the artists have all the elements, and direction they need to complete their assignments at the start of their sessions.
• Works with the Supervisors to prepare budgets and schedules for projects.
• Maintains the master schedule for a project, pacing the work appropriately, with production milestones. Works with the VP Post-Production to book artists for sessions.
• Attends spotting sessions with clients, to make sure that the effects in the edit match the effects in the bid, or else adjusts the show’s budget.
• Tracks purchase orders, hours worked by artists, and other financial data.
• Negotiates change orders, as needed.
• Prepares budgets vs. actuals reports for management.
• Gives artists the time estimates for each shot, so artists can pace their work.
• Acts as quality control for a project, making sure that all final shots are the correct version, the proper length, in the proper format, and delivered to the client per their specifications.
• Oversees the artists’ daily work and gives notes when the Supervisor is out of the office.
Keeps track of revision notes received from clients, and makes sure they are implemented if time/budget allows.
