I wonder what's their backbone? I checked out their website but it didn't specify whether their source was a DSL line, cable, WiMAX, satellite, or whatever. Does anyone have an idea?

It's a mesh network, where coverage spreads out one cell at a time - a new cell will always be within the coverage of the last cell. Another source of bandwidth may also come from existing DSL subscribers who wants to join the community mesh, it's like sharing your connection with everybody in the network. What makes this work is that AAA (authentication) is done centrally by them and you get 25% cut.

I was mulling over an idea like this but didn't know where to start. I was likewise concerned with my own home network's security. In any case, it would be interesting how this develops as it would be a fight between a monolithic/single vendor approach (PLDT) vs a publicly-owned, and possible more redundant community approach.

It would have been nice if it were free or something like P50 per month just for providing the authentication service.

On another note, with weRoam mobile at P2000/mo and immediate availability where there are EDGE cellsites, wifingbayan may take a loooong time to get out of the incubation stage. Unless of course, it's also their plan to get acquired by PLDT.
