Default Sharing files between powerbook and ibook

Help! I recently upgraded to a G4 Powerbook with built-in airport card and I got an ibook for my wife, also, with an airport card. I understand that I can create a network between the 2 macs I just can't figure out how.

    Help?

you can do it 2 ways... ad-hoc (or wireless) or with a cat 5 ethernet cable

    which would you prefer?

you can try one of the fastest method in transferring/sharing files between 'books-- firewire target disk mode. all you need is a 6 to 6 pin FW cable. HTH

For connecting 2 'books wirelessly (assuming you don't have wifi router), go to network prefs, then airport, then enter a network name. Then enter the settings pictured below. For powebook, use the 192.168.1.1 IP address. For the iBook, use 192.168.1.2

Then go to the finder and launch a new window, it should appear in the network tab. Or if not, try Go>Connect to server> then type smb://192.168.1.1/

I think this will work but I haven't actually tried it. I feel I might be missing something but try it out, it should work.

    Hmmm....

Would simply making AppleTalk active, using automatic DHCP, and turning Personal File Sharing also work without specifying IP numbers?

I usually do this _but_ on _cabled_ peer-to-peer or (small, non-security critical) network access.

Never had a chance to connect peer-to-peer with another *book with AirPort (yet).

    Hi guys,

Correction about the first instructions I posted. The above isn't really necessary. I knew I was missing something and I just found it now.

You can set the network settings to
    1.) By default join: Automatic
    2.) Under TCP/IP: Configure: DHCP

    It doesn't really matter.

What you need to do on mac number 1 is:
1.) Under the Airport icon, create network
2.) Give the new network a name. What happens is mac no. 1 will create a wifi network, essentially becoming a software base station.
3.) then go to mac number 2 and you should find the network name under the list of available networks to join. Click on it.

Open a new window in finder and you should see the other mac in the network tab. Or if not, try Go>Connect to server> then type smb://192.168.1.1/ ONLY IF you followed my first instructions and set the IP address of your mac manually.

Its that simple. Sheesh. Sorry if I sent some of you in circles

@ catrina: yes, it will work, assuming you only have 2 machines involved in the network.

@ dude_funk: Don't bother enabling Apple Talk. That protocol is only used if you want OS 9 or lower macs to connect to you or vice versa. Yes leaving it on DHCP is fine.
