setting up wifi - can\'t get a connection
I need some help setting up my wifi.
I have a D-Link DI-524 and an Al17". I've set up everything according to the instructions [ethernet cable on DSL modem to WAN port on router, did all the power on/off requirements], but the WAN light on the router does not light up, although the WLAN is lit. My airport signal is at full strength, but I can't get the internet connection. What am I doing wrong????!!!! Is it a PLDT setting I need to change?
Suggestions will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Hi there.
A couple of questions:
- Which DSL modem (brand & model) are you using right now?
- How do you connect to myDSL before? Via DHCP (turn on your Mac and you're automatically connected) or PPPoE (manually connect using Internet Connect, kinda like dial-up, complete with myDSL login and password)?

hi henjie.
- The modem is a Nokia M5122
- When I am at the office, I connect using DHCP; at home, where I am trying to set up the wifi, PPPoE
thanks

Set the router to use PPPoE and enter your username and password and let it get an IP address from the DSL service.
On your powerbook, just leave it at DHCP and you should be able to get an IP address from your router (just be sure that the router is set to distribute IP via DHCP). If you still can't get online, trying pinging a host, i.e.
On Terminal.app, type "ping 203.172.11.21" or "ping 203.172.11.25". I use these as PLDTs DNS servers.

Buti na lang. :-) That's the same model I'm using. Better than the newer SMC, etc. modems being supplied to end-users by PLDT.
at home, where I am trying to set up the wifi, PPPoE
You're gonna need to set up your D-Link router as the PPPoE client first, meaning it'll do all the connecting for you.
Access your router's configuration page by firing up your favorite web browser and typing in "http://192.168.0.1". Enter "admin" as the login and leave the password field blank.
Once you're in, click on "WAN" to configure the WAN settings. Choose "PPPoE", then "Dynamic PPPoE". Enter your myDSL user name/PL no. and password and make sure that "Auto-reconnect" is enabled. Click on "Apply". Then click on "Status" and check if the router's already connected to myDSL (under WAN). If it's already connected, then you should already be able to access the internet wirelessly using your AlBook. :-)
Also, don't forget to secure your router by entering a password via the "Tools" tab. Give "admin" or "user" their own passwords. Use the new passwords the next time you access the router configuration page. ;-)
It's also a good idea to turn on WEP or WPA (for security) as well as change the SSID, etc. etc. But try connecting to the net first. We can do all the security stuff later (tell us if you need help on this). :-)

i can't access "http://192.168.0.1" safari "gives up after 60 secs of trying"
how am i supposed to be connected at this point - directly to modem through ethernet? or routed through via d-link?

Routed through D-Link.
DSL modem -> D-Link router --(wireless)--> AlBook.
Check if your AlBook's AirPort card is set to DHCP (System Preferences -> Network; Show: Airport; TCP/IP). Then connect to the D-Link router using AirPort (the wireless network's name will be "default" which is the D-Link router's default SSID).

Still can't set the router to PPPoE
henjie, I did your suggestions:
when I apply the settings, it says "the device is restarting" with a continue button beneath. The router does restart, but even after 20 mins, it still says - "the device is restarting". when i press continue, and check the status, it indicates that it is not connected.
thanks.

Try to reset the router first. The reset button is at the back. Use a paper clip to press the reset button (hold it in for 10 seconds before releasing). Then wait 10 minutes or so before trying to configure the router again.
Good luck!
