    Default Question about Wifi

    Hi

Just curious, when there's a wifi signal in an area could i use it by using my own account? For example, let's say that there is a hotspot in SBC sponsored by airborne access, could i use my WIZ account ? what of private hotspots?

I didn't know that airborne access' office was an office room away from where i go. was hoping to hitch a ride

Airborne Access is PLDT's wireless service; WiZ is Globe's. I don't think your WiZ account will work with Airborne Access. :-)

As for private hotspots, as long as they're "open" (no WEP encryption, etc.), then you'll be able to "borrow" their bandwidth. Free internet. ;-)

    Hi,

How do you configure an Al Powerbook for Wifi access. I want to use DLSU's Wifi in RCBC Plaza but unfortunately nobody seems to know how to configure my notebook.

    thanks

Did you set up your AlBook using 'Utilities' airport admin ?

For my Airport set up, one of the most important things is to put in the right DNS (numbers) into it, so ask what the DLSU DNS is and put it in. This should apply even to non-airport WiFi set-ups.

If you need further help, post a new thread on this.

    Cheers,

    Hi iToy,

To use DLSU's WiFi, you need to set up the proxy (which can be found at System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Proxies tab). Check the box beside Automatic Proxy Configuration and input http://wpad.dlsu.edu.ph at the URL box on the right side. Click Apply Now and surf away!

This is how it is done when connecting to DLSU - Manila's network. I'm guessing that it's also the same at RCBC

    PS
For those wanting to go wireless at DLSU - Manila (Taft), check out this list of hotspots

Is the WIFI restricted access? Like before there's some particular sites.. or list of sites that doesn't work.. And only internal telnet access is allowed..

You can use the AirPort Express Assistant located in your Utilities folder - assuming you're using APX. I'm not sure if you can also use the AirPort Admin Utility...the other guys here would probably know.

Only sites with obscene contents (you know what I mean) are inaccessible. P2P, IRC, and the like are also blocked. IM applications such as AIM, Y!M and MSN can connect to their respective servers provided the proxy settings are properly configured (proxy.dlsu.edu.ph; port 80).

Btw, the steps I indicated in my previous post are only applicable when you use Safari. So iToy, if you plan to use Firefox, IE, or any other browsers that do not respect the settings provided for in the System Preferences, you'll have to re-input the proxy URL under each of the browser's preferences
