Default Network Status Panel - Disappearing Ethernet

I recently changed hard drives on my PowerBook, and now, I noticed that I don't have the "Built-in Ethernet" icon in my Network Status Panel.

I have verified that the ethernet port works. And the icon does appear when an ethernet cable is plugged in. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Try resetting your Mac's PRAM: hold down the Command/Apple-Option-P-R keys immediately upon restarting your Mac. Do not release the keys until you hear the startup chime for the third time (not counting the one after the restart).

    Good luck!

That didn't work, I tried resetting the PMU as well, and that didn't help either. Any other ideas?

    Anyone? Beuller?

    Thanks again!

    Hoy,

Have you checked Apple System Profiler (under Network) to see if the port shows up there? Also, try using the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with your Mac. With these two, you'll be able to rule out an hardware issue.

    Elbert,

Yes, it does show up in System Profiler, and it does show up if I plug in a working ethernet cable, just not when it's idle.

Hmm, would it be difficult for you to do a clean install?

Not really, but I'm hesitant to do it... I just reinstalled everything when I replaced the HDD... which is also the time that the icon itself disappeared. *sigh* If I can't find any solution to this, I probably will have to reinstall anyway.

    Thanks,

I had a similar problem with a disappearing CD/DVD icon in System Prefs. It was resolved after Apple released an OS update. Perhaps you can just leave it be and hope that it just reappears one day?

Hehehe, that's what I'm leaning towards right now, it's just such a pain to reinstall everything.

And besides, it's a minor thing, the port works. I am still open to any suggestions on how to fix it though. Otherwise, I'll just leave it alone. Sana nga it gets fixed eventually.
