Default MacBook can't connect to windows network

I'm on an office LAN and used to be able to see the windows network automatically thru my iBook G4.

Since I got a macbook (OSX 10.4.8 & all updates), I have not been able to:

    1. See/access the network neighborhood
    2. Use shared printers on the network neigborhood
    3. Connect via FTP thru an FTP client

This is so frustrating! Our MIS Dept has opened all the ports of my IP address and I still can't connect thru FTP.

I always have to email my docs to someone so I could have them printed because I can't see any shared printers.

I have searched the net (forums, apple support, etc) but none of the prescribed solutions work. Our MIS dept hasn't found a solution either.

I have reformatted & reinstalled 2x already. Still no dice.

I am hoping that pinoys have found a way around this and can post the settings here.

    TIA!

Just a few questions to see what the problem is:

    1. Are you using your office lan to connect to the internet? If you are, take a look at your network settings and see what DNS/gateway and network mask you are using. Ask your IT people to check if the settings are correct. Note: You might need to configure airport (wireless) and ethernet (wired) depending on how you connect to the office network.

    2. Can your old ibook G4 still connect to the office windows network? If it can, make sure that you copy its network settings to your new macbook and try again.

    3. Can you ping other machines? Open the Terminal app then ping the machine name or if that's not working for you, try pingging the IP address of the machine e.g. 10.x.x.x?

    4. Are you connecting to your office windows network wirelessly or are ethernet cable? If wirelessly, are you sure it's from your office network?

The greatest harm can come from the best intentions.

I can connect to the internet (www) & email thru my office lan so no problem there. It's the FTP access via an FTP client (or terminal) problem that's a problem. All ports are open on our proxy server and I also tried all settings.

It was just on auto setting in the iBook.

I can ping them but not any FTP address

    Wired.

Has anyone experienced this w/ the Macbook? Seems wierd that the Macbook has a hard time connecting to a windows network neighborhood when the iBook did it seamlessly w/o having to tweak any settings.

    TIA
