    Default mac & pc connection.... please help!

    Hi. Was hoping someone can help me out. I've been a mac user for the past few years. I just recently got a MacMini for the house but decided to keep my PC running for my nieces & nephews' general use. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port) router connected to both Mac & PC machines. They work fine individually, but i can't seem to connect both machines at the same time. Now, everytime someone needs internet on the PC, I have to disconnect on the Mac, and vise versa. Anyone got any suggestions?

    Things to check;

    1. Make sure all your ethernet cables are the correct ones (straight, not cross) coming from the router to the workstations.

    2. In the web based administration screen of your router, make sure ALL your ethernet ports are activated.

    3. Make sure your DHCP Server has enough IP addresses to assign.

    4. One (or both) workstations maybe using a STATIC IP. Make sure you set your workstations to get IP addresses automatically from the router via DHCP.

    If you know your DSL uplink username and passwords, you can do a router reset and reconfigure it from scratch.

    Good Luck.

    What type of connection do you have to the internet? Is it broadband or dial-up? I'm just assuming broadband (and for the sake of argument, PPPoE like most PLDT subscribers)

    When you say "I have to disconnect" do you mean the internet connection or disconnect them physically (or disable their NIC)?

    If its the former, that suggests that your individual machines have a PPPoE connections setup on them... which can mean you're just using your router as a hub. If this is true, then configure the router itself to do the PPPoE connection to your ISP and just have your individual machines point to the common gateway (router)

    If it's the latter, then of course it could be an IP conflict as dave said. DHCP should do it, or you can also ensure your machines will never have an IP conflict if you just set ALL machines to different, static IPs

    You don't have to worry about your cable types since you already said that you've been able to connect one or the other. This is either an IP conflict or a rare case of having 2 similar PPPoE connections from different machines trying to connect to the same ISP (and account) more than once.

    If it so happens that you're doing dial-up, unless your router supports dial-up, then you can't rely on it as a gateway. You'd probably have to use ICS on one machine (as the gateway) and point the other machine to it (and you would have just spent unessecarily for a router when all you needed was a hub or switch)

    Am I correct in assuming that your PC is wireless too? Do you have security enabled on the AE?

    I think I know the problem...

    All your workstations are using PPPoE to "connect" to your Uplink. On typical single user installations, this will work fine. This means you do not need supplemental devices such as access points and hubs.

    In environments where you want multiple stations accessing the internet at the same time, you need to add wired/wireless access points (NOT ethernet hubs/switches). Access points differ from hubs/switches because these devices (such as the Airport Express/Extreme) support "gateway" functions that hubs/switches cannot.

    In both situations (BEFSR41 & the Airport Express), it is highly likely that these devices are NOT properly setup. What I would wager is that the workstations connected to these are still using PPPoE to establish a connection.

    What you need to do;

    1. Have your access point do the connecting to the uplink for you. Go through the device's manual on how to have it login, instead of the stations using PPPoE. You will need your login/password provided by your uplink handy.

    2. On your access point, activate DHCP and NAT. What this means is that any workstation connecting to your access point will be assigned an IP address by the access point and will properly forward it's network requests via the access point which acts as a Gateway.

    3. On your workstations (PC or MAC), remove the connection scripts and have it automatically get them from the network.

    im sorry for the late reply, yes my pc is also wireless. i bought a "wireless" usb 2.0 adapter (i guess its netgear) for my pc. so i just plug it in the usb connection and it takes care of accessing the AE. and yes i have security enabled (password) in my AE as well.

    Hi, I was hoping someone could help me with a similar problem. I'm helping a friend set up his home network. He would like to share his internet connection between a Powermac G5 and a PC running Win98, using an Edimax BR-6104 cable/DSL router.

    Although we are now able to connect to the internet with the Powermac G5, the PC can't connect to the internet. The DSL service provider is SkyDSL, and they apparently do not use PPPoE (they would not provide a username and password) and provides fixed Ip instead.

    Can this be addressed through simple fixes in the router's configuration? Or change of settings on the PC, perhaps? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
