Ping on the Terminal is the fastest way to access it (along with other utilities such as ifconfig, traceroute, netstat).

Only useful if the server responds to ping requests.

marvinp, danieldy, directX - Thanks a bunch guys! I've been having a few weird problems of not being able to view certain web sites. Example: this morning, I couldn't view geocities.com and philmug.ph although I could view apple.com and nokia.com. Pinging on (gasp) Windows 98 clearly gets a reply from the mentioned non-viewable sites.

    Thanks again to all

Are you by any chance on PLDT's MyDSL? I'm also having problems connecting to various websites, this one included. I'm on PLDT MyDSL Pro.

    Eric,

Try pinging the IP addresses of the sites that you cannot access and see how it goes. If you can ping it, then it is a DNS problem.

    Cheers!

    Hi Prof,

Pinged a number of sites and all I got was 'ping: unknown host--' this from sites I usually visit.

    Eric,

Unknown host only happens if the name of the host cannot be resolved to its IP address. Post the sites that you are trying to access and I'll see if I can access them and perhaps post their IP addresses as well.

    Cheers!

That's exactly mentioned in the (html) error message: "DNS error"

Short of simply informing my ISP (again), is there anything I can do on my end?

Oh and I only get this problem during the sunrise hours.

When this problem manifests, I can do a ping on, say "www.yahoo.com" but I could not actually view the html page when I type the same URL on my browser. I was thinking it was a Windows 98 issue on my ol' Pentium 166

    Thanks
