Default H-E-L-P!! To the Wireless gods... Can\'t connect to the net...

    Hi all!

This is a follow-up post from the post of Yeyey regarding his Linksys wireless-B router model number: BEFW11S4. We have been working on the settings of both the MAC and the router the whole day, and still we have no successful connection.

Here is what we have accomplished so far:

    1. We have made all the settings for DHCP automatic and no proxies in the network settings of the MAC

    2. We have enabled DHCP and Wireless on the Linksys and the PPPoE has been enabled

Here are the problems we could not solve:

    1. We could not log in to the modem - we used the IP add: 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 and still we could not get into the admin settings of the modem ( he is using an ADSL non-branded modem from SkyDSL) We were suspecting that the modem is set to operate as a router instead of a a bridge and we were hoping to change these settings via direct connection between the modem and the MAC, but we were not able to get in.

    2. We tried to establish a PPPoE login through the Linksys and entered ADMIN for the user name, and 1234 for the password. SkyDSL refuses to give out the user name and password for reasons that they will have a hard time in the future configuring the network, which i think is a bunch of bull, they just dont want multiple users for the connection.

So there you have it folks... another wireless problem to hack. Thank you all for your time reading this, and we hope to get Yeyey surfing wirelessly in no time short.

    before anything else...

how is everything connected now? how many computers are in your network? are they all mac's or pc's or a combination?

Since you're using PPoE, you need a valid username and password. In the ISP invoice that is given during first signing up, the username and password should be written on it. Not unless your ISP set the computer up themselves and really didn't give you the username or password.
(you have the right to get it from them - if indeed they were the one's who set it up).

you cannot use a fictitious username and password in the routers PPoE setting. you have to use the one given to you, so the router would authenticate with the modem to the ISP.

192.168.1.1 is the default IP for a linksys router so it might be conflicting with your modem if it is also using this IP address. (not unless you already changed it).
you can do a ping sweep to find out what is on your network and to see which ip goes to where.

Ok so this is the network:

One Linksys Wireless-B and One Powerbook 12' w/ Airport card. There is no connection established whether its is connected on the wireless or through the ethernet.

REALLY?! The username and password is given in the invoice... I shall relay this info to Yeyey. According to Yeyey, SkyDSL refuses to give both the username and password and saying that its "unethical".

We will try to secure the username and passord and will update you Maverick. I was wondering if there is any way to access the admin settings on the modem directly the same way the Linksys could be accessed through an IP?

Are there any SkyDSL users out there? Do you also have problems with securing account information?

    Thanks!

i think what they meant by "unethical" is trying to access the web app of the dsl modem itself. they don't want you screwing around with the settings. you don't have to touch the dsl modem at all in fact, if you're setting up a router/ap.

all you need are the account username and password that is assigned to you. not the "admin" account for the modem itself.

looks like there is some miscommunication going on here...

oh by the way, technically, you aren't supposed to have a router to share internet connection (unless your ISP set it up themselves - for a fee of course). most if not all ISP frown upon this coz they are loosing revenue.

Question: Had you not screwed around with your network, how would you have had to log on? For example, I use PLDT DSL, and they install an app on the PC that the modem connects to, and the app is the one that dials up through PPPoE. In which case, the PPPoE connection would have just been setup by the router and no need for the app.

In your case, if you are saying that the modem also has a built in router and establishes the connection, ie, just connect your PC to the ethernet port on the modem and surf away, perhaps all you need to do is not even configure PPPoE on the Linksys and just use it as an access point?

Is connecting to the WAN the only issue? Are you able to successfully establsih a LAN connection between your various local computers, PC or Mac?

Also, if your modem is, in fact, a modem/router, perhaps you are not able to login to the modem's admin page because it is plugged into the WAN port. If it has a router built in, you should try to see if it works if you connect it to one of the LAN ports.

First of all, thank you white comet fro the help. Here is the deal, I just spoke to the tech support of skydsl and I was trying to get the username and password that I can use for the PPPoE. I was told that they do not provide support to the subscriber who wants to install a router. In which case they cannot provide the username and password that I am trying to obtain. I even asked if I even needed that at all and the reply that I got was that he can't provide an answer to my question since they don't extend that kind of support.

I understand where they are coming from as Maverick explained.

All I want is to be able to have a wifi setup here at home. Right now, I have a wifi router that is sending a signal to my pb but I still can't browse. I need your help on this, guys. Macky and I have tried everything in terms of configuring the router.

Maverick, is the username and password all I need to make this work? According to the tech support guy of SkyDSL, I need to talk to someone higher than him to see what they can do about this. The thing is that I have to wait until tomorrow to get to talk to this guy. Oh well...

Thanks, guys. Hope you can help.

yeah you need a way to authenticate in order to proceed. no username and pass. no use for the router.

the thing is, they should have given you this info in the first place. check all the documents that they gave you during first installation. it should be all there. usually the username is the same as the email address they gave you. the password may also be the same but sometimes can be different.

i've had ISP here in HK, in the US in the RP and a few other countries. this is SOP, they should provide this in one of the documents during first installation. also, for other new router/ap users out there, NEVER EVER EVER EVER mention you are going to use a router/ap.

if you read the agreement between you and the isp, using more than 1 computer is a big no no unless they installed it themselves and they charge you a monthly fee for using more than one pc.

I used to work for Linksys so I know how you feel. I've had numerous calls with the same situation. *** note: always read the fine print ***

also another note to you guys and gals out there, just in case your ISP needs to come to your house to repair something, make sure you hide your router. If the ISP technician sees it, you may be charged after that or worse, get some sort of penalty fee or who knows what else.

    Yehey,
    Is skydsl under bayantel?

    If so.
Place in your network settings/ proxy section
    proxy.skyinet.net : 3128

    Click on the Web proxy

then place bypass proxy setting the router number

Try to reset your router first.
