Default Globe DSL user gets his Ethernet Modem, at last !!

Have been using Globe DSL since March and have finally been upgraded to an Ethernet Modem instead of that rip-off awful USB Speedtouch ugly bluegreen stingray/frog looking modem.

Guys, Believe me, I gave them a bit of a difficult time. Complaining (nicely of course) & emphatically + mentioning the fact that I signed up for a 384 speed connexion and NOT ONCE AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT DID I GET 384 !! not even 300, maybe one or two times a little over 200Kbps !! because the USB speed (I am told) by design can just do a little over 128 or so ??

Anyway, after having tried getting PLDT for more than a year in my neck of the woods (Shaw Blvd. Mandaluyong City) and countless frustrating "NOes" because I have a fibre optic line, surprise surprise, they call me and tell me they were giving me a DSL line already. They installed new cards for fibre optic lines already.

It just so happens that Globe tecchies are in my house upgrading my 'USBfrog"
to a slick silvery Mouse looking modem. USB 2.0 they said. Thing is, my TiBook 667 lappie don't got no USB 2.0 so, ....same same SSoooo SLOOOOW

and guess who comes knocking at my door while they were out checking the line in da poste, PLDT with an el Cheapo Taiwan ethernet modem but giving me only a 128 speed, 45 hour DSL for 1,500 pesos (all in ? I musta enrolled/enquired into this while online some months back!)

So I says great, but 128 is too slow, can I change to a 2,500 512 speed unlimited plan, they said yes but I have to enroll again, so they leave with their modem, and I think, complain to Globe and 'stick it to them!'

So I rightly and accurately inform them that PLDT is 'knocking at my DSL door with an ethernet modem...' and hit them with this line "Since day 1, I have been requesting for an ethernet modem, this USB modems of yours just choke down the speed ...I hope you guys at Globe can help me out on this one...."

arty: I got the ethernet modem just this afternoon !!

But wait, speeds are just slightly higher, I got a 261 speed for 10 seconds and 287 just a few minutes ago still no 384, ...even for a burst !!! So will be checking it out for a few days or so .

PLDT is sending me a Business salesrep in a few days to 'sell me.' will keep them in my hip pocket for a bit until ......

    Abangan ...

will keep you posted on this

this ethernet modem is definitely faster though !

    Muggers PBGA !!

FYI, the maximum speed of USB 1.1 is 12Mbps. I don't think USB speed is your bottleneck.

    Gotcha java lover !!

Thing is ethernet is the standard for networking, USB is just for periperals and just recently for networking. All USB modem users including me find it slower that ethernet !!

So where is the choke point, i still do not know, maybe the Globe guys are tweaking down my 384 speed real low (162,149,189 Kbps) to make more money. Who knows !!!

All I know is I am paying for a 384 and I am getting the equiv of a 128 ! Rats

I will give them 1 week and if nada, then I switch to myDSL.

Fair enough, I think. I'm subscribing to a Globe DSL, hopefully their service is good in our area.

    Hey Coffeelover,

I am seriously thinking of junking GlobeDSL for myDSL which is available already in my area (Shaw Blvd/Wack Wack).

If you get the GlobeDSL, don't get the USB green frog (very unstable on Jaguar and Panther), the silver big mouse looking USB one might be better because it is USB 2.0 no problem with Panther), best is the ethernet modem which to me is zippier but numerically slower than the speeds I got with the USB 2.0 type !! Does not seem logical but I have been getting ONLY 145, 162, 195 Kbps at any time (using their bandwidth meter at www.utilities.globequest.com.ph), maybe once in a blue moon you will go over 200.

So if you think you are going to subscribe to and get 384 Kbps, (burst even) forget it NEVER !! Try and negotiate before you commit. Always keep them on the defensive. You will actually getting a slow 256 Kbps and paying for a 384 !! So Good luck.

Tech support is good though and they answer quickly any hour !! If you are in my neck of the woods, ask for Dong Vallejo (?) and/or Jun, they are good Globe DSL installers !!

Cheers, it is myDSL for me, a bit more money (Globe 1,800 ++) to myDSL (2,000 ?)

Keep in touch as to how it goes with you...

Thanks for the advice. I'm seriously having second thoughts about it. I did request for an ethernet modem, they said they will try to accomodate.

FYI. DSL reliability is also dependent on your distance from the phone company's central office. And distance here refers to phone cable lenth. 17,500 feet is the standard limit.

The Globe guys said they were tweaking my DSL from their main box (?) at the Facilities Centre on Shaw beside that tall 40 storey building. I figure that is about 1+ kilometer from my house.

Speed is as I've said. Next week is the day of reckoning !! Think I'm changin. no way this can get any faster !!. And I am not going to pay for the 3 grand or so early cutting off !! I figure they were the one who ab initio reneged on their contract. Fine print notwitstanding, their GlobeDSL product was/is not a 384 Kbps connexion !!

Will keep you posted on this thread !!

If there are any Mugger-lawyers, I can use some legal opinions here !!

I got my DSL installed last Saturday, they gave me the silver USB modem, speed is very good with my Panther ibook. I downloaded Mozilla Firefox at around 40kBps (approx 320kbps), close to the maximum. Overall experience is pretty good, will continue to monitor.

    Good luck Coffeelover,

Still with Globe, been busy the past weeks. Last night the speed went down to 24Kbps !!

not KBps, but like a 22.4 modem dial up speed ?? My speed does not go faster than 202 Kbps. I am changing soon as I can.

Can't do anything with that Silver Mouse, can't route it, can't use Airport, NADA !! Hassle them for the ethernet !

    Cheers,

  12.
