External Antenna

Is it effective to extend the antenna by connecting a cable and extending it externally? My router is on the third floor of my house with concrete walls and I get weak signal when I am on the first floor. What kind of locally available antenna would you recommend? By the way, I am using a Linksys WRT54G .
