Default Do I Need To Turn My Modem & Router Off?

Hello again, folks. I just had my broadband connection 3 days ago and I was just wondering if I need to turn my modem and router off when I'm not using them?

I'm currently subscribing to an unlimited package.

    Wear and tear?

    TIA

Well, the guys over at pldt told me that I should switch it off when I can beause it remains hot when it's on all the time. Turning it off would allow it to cool down. However, I hardly turn mine off and nothing happens... so far

    Hey guys,

It seems that you did not have any problem with your routers and PLDT DSL. I too had my broadband connection a few days ago but i cannot configure my Linksys wireless B Router to work with it. I brought the router to Ynzal for help and after configuring the router to connect throuth PPOE and filling up the required username and password it still won't work. My computers work flawlessly if connected to the dsl modem but once I use the router, it can't connect to the internet. I am not even trying to use it for networking. Just to share the internet connection both wired and wirelessly. Any help would be appreciated.

Alright then, it should remain on. Unless I go on a long vacation, the router and the modem will remain on.

@docnap: I had no problems with my linksys but it's the G model I got. I just plugged my RJ 45 cable from the modem to the linksys, fired up my Airport Extreme, and all worked well. Does your Airport have signal, or you cannot connect to the internet?

PLDT will replace them anyway... so it's on most of the time for me also.

Ever since the modem and the router were installed, they've never been turned off, only during outages din.

I turn mine off when I know that I won't be using them for at least a day.

More of kapraningan. Although I'm WPA protected and my SSID is turned off, I don't really want to take the risk of anyone being able to break into my home network.

Same here, I've been on broadband since 2000 and I haven't turned off my router and modem unless I'm going on vacation or during power outages. No problems so far.

Thanks, brain1976! 4 years and still going strong! That's very reassuring.
