was checking out a few ISP's in HK last night.
My former ISP when I was in highschool was Netvigator.
I checked their offering online and found out that it wasn't
an unlimited broadband account but has a limit. (in 3 mbps and 6 mbps)
I checked other one's like Pacific Supernet (subsidiary of Pacific Internet locally) and they have unlimited accounts and is a little cheaper than the netvigator one.
BUT!!! At the bottom of the page is a disclaimer that says Mac's aren't compatible. Are they for real?!?!?
1) Is netvigator a good choice despite the time limitation?
2) Is Pacific Supernet a good alternative since it's cheaper and
is unlimited?
3) Are there any other good alternatives ?
that page is quite old and never been updated. i am subscribed to NETVIGATOR BROADBAND 6Mbps for HK$199 per month. i'm tied to 12 mos contract though. No downtime since i signed up last DEC 2003. Fast and Reliable. wifi service is very expensive though. HK$6 FOR EVERY 10 minutes. (FYI : all famous cafe's in HK are powered by netvigator ie STARBUCKS, PACIFIC COFFEE)
You may also consider SONET (Sony broadband.) If you're a subscriber, you can avail of their unlimited wifi service for only HK$50 a month. Sonet offers 24 hrs customer service while netvigator offers 9am-9pm only. they also offer 6Mbps connection. and they're cheaper.
both ISP work seamlessly with Macs. and they are the two most popular. pacific supernet caters mostly to corporate accounts nowadays.
thanks sir much appreciated. So if you were in my shoes, would you stick with Netvigator or go for SoNet?
by the way, how can I subscribe to either one? I remember when I got my dial up from netvigator a long time ago, I had to go to one of their shops. Do I still have to do that nowadays? or can I do that online somehow?
I am waiting for my contract to expire. Will switch to So-net soon (if Netvigator wont lower their fee). ZaRah, a fellow Mugger is a recent SONET subscriber, since then, her POISONED never gets idle.
Subscription is very convenient. a) phone b) on-line c) personal. have your credit card ready.
MacArenas is right. And it’s wise not to trust some of the info you come across on websites regarding HK providers. I noticed that it’s not updated frequently, & it’s still a safe bet to just use the ever reliable landline to give them a call & be updated of their promos. Competition amongst the different providers here can be quite cutthroat so they’re always trying to outdo each other with ever-changing promos. And as MacArenas mentioned, once you’ve made your choice, you’re tied up automatically to a one-year contract; which means that if you come across a new promo, you can’t avail of it until you’ve lived through your original contractual obligation. Then again, maybe there’s a promo somewhere that can cancel out your original promo so you can avail of the new promo?!?! Aaaaahhhh!!!!!
By the way, sometimes the providers give freebies too. Like when I opened my Netvigator account, I was given a DVD player as a gift. Nothing fancy though; but good enough for “pampasalubong.”
I personally am still using Netvigator (in my 4th continuation of my annual contract), got upgraded to the Netvigator One plan for FREE.
I'm paying around HKD168 for the basic plan, then an additional HKD24 for the Mailguard feature to filter away most of those damn junk mails. As a Netvigator One account I get 24 hrs support and 6Mbs connection. No problems so far for me, I also get Now Broadband TV for free (basic 6 channels) and for HKD200 I get 10 pay channels in the package.
WiFi in cafes actually should only charge about HKD20 - 40 for an hour depending on location (at least that was what I was told on the customer support conversation)... did they change it?
I'd agree with both companies tho (So-Net and Netvigator), they're the two major choices here in HK... I just stuck with Netvigator coz I hate switching and all my communication subscriptions (mobile phone, broadband, etc.) are with PCCW... so I can check my account with a single phone call.
My Mobile provider is 3 HK. Used to be with PCCW’s “one2free” but I found the rates a bit steep.
And because of this thread, I called up Netvigator to inquire about any existing promos and I was able to avail of one.
My original plan was: 328 bukols/month of unlimited usage with free installation of NowBroadband TV (to which I added the Discovery channel & Animax-- for a fee, of course--to top off the 6 free channels).
With the new plan/promo, I’m to shell out 250 smackers/month (the contract is for 18 months) and I could add one pay channel for free; for that I chose HBO. It’s still unlimited net-surfing at 6mbps.
And remember the freebies I mentioned? For this new contract I got, they’ll be sending me a stub within two weeks so I could go over their claims office and collect a .... Dyaraaan!!! PS2!! F***in A! Looks like one of my pamangkins will be getting a used PS1 soon. Now to find out who among the buggers have been naughty or nice.
