Believe it or not, I've never had a printer at home. That's because I hardly print. Besides, what are office resources for if not to be taken advantage of? Wait a minute, I'm veering off course here.
Because of the unbelievably low prices of inkjet printers these days, I recently purchased an el cheapo HP DeskJet 3745 for P2,700, from Shopwise, of all places.
Finally, I could put my AP Express USB port and wireless printing feature to good use.
Using my PowerBook running Tiger, I added the new printer quickly and easily. No hassles, and my first printout came without a hitch. At this point, I was happy.
Next, I tried to print from my wife's Tangerine iBook, which is running Panther (10.3.9). Here's where my problem started. I can't add the printer to the printer list. Panther says "driver not installed". I fired up VersionTracker, downloaded and installed HP DeskJet Software for Mac OS X 2.7.1. Still, the Add printer utility says "driver not installed". The weird thing is that if I plug the printer directly to the iBook's USB port, I'm able to add the printer and print with no problems whatsoever.
Later I noticed what was wrong. When I plug the printer directly to the iBook, Add Printer reports it as HP DeskJet 3745 (the correct model number). As a Rendezvous printer (via APX), it's reported as 3740. The weird thing is that on my PowerBook, it's the same thing--3745 when plugged directly, 3740 if via APX. But it prints fine on Tiger anyway.
I searched the web and found that I was not alone. On Tiger, it's fine, on Panther, it's not.
Has anyone experienced the same? Is there a workaround? If I've installed the HP drivers, which covers almost all DeskJet models, shouldn't I be able to add it?
Same problem here, but under WIFI printing on a Canon i455 connected to a WinXP machine. I'm using 10.3.9 and the printer was identified on my iBook's network connection - no problem. The printer was properly identified and all appropriate drivers were installed, but whenever I try to print.. no printout.
Here's the summary page in Airport Admin Utility (which is what both Tiger and Panther shows): It reports the printer model correctly: '3745'.
As mentioned earlier, it prints fine in Tiger, but I still can't find a solution for Panther, even if Airport Admin Utility reports the correct model, I can't add it (driver not installed).
