Default Slow Internet Connection on a Mac??

    Hi guys,

Anyone have this problem? I'm currently using dial-up prepaid internet cards (I'm only in Manila for vacation and prepaid is the easiest -although slowest- way to surf the net from home). I know dial up cards are slow but on my Powerbook they are unusually SLOW. It takes 10 minutes to open the Philmug page! My sister, who uses a PC laptop, manages much faster speeds using the same internet cards. We've tried Bonanza, Infocom, PLDT, all with the same result.

Wifi is not a problem. I go to Seattle's Best, hook up, and it's fine.

Is there something in settings or preferences I can muck around with? I refuse to believe a PC laptop is faster than my Mac...

that's weird... my mac's internet connection is faster than my previous windows unit. Anyways, m using GO internet cards and I do not have a problem so far with the speed... it may not be DSL but its ok... try it.

Proxy or other configuration settings perhaps? Given your experience with various ISPs out there, it does not seem to be an ISP related issue but either a line or settings issue on your device. Have you tried on another phone line? I assume that you are using a landline connection, right?

You may want to try creating a new location in your network prefs so you can set it up clean.

Could also be the quality of your phone line. Are you using an extension that goes around the house or are you plugged in directly to the source. Experience has taught me that if you have an extension wire that twists and turns till it get to your room, chances are the connection speed won't be that good.

I'm using ISP bonanza and it is working pretty fine.

I agree with cyberprince, I have had the same experience at my parents' place where there are extension lines and this is actually causing the slow connection.

i think they're right. the phoneline in my office sucks, my connection is slow, and would usually get disconnected in 15 minutes. but at home, my connection is pretty fast (for a dial up that is), and rarely gets disconnected aswell.

but i'm still not quite sure why your sister's pc is doing better.
