powerbook 1ghz or ibook 1.2ghz
hey there guys a friend of mine is scouring the market for a new portable mac.
she has found a preused 1ghz powerbook with 512 ram. for about 75k combo.
i suggested, she should get the new souped up ibook and buy an additional 256mb ram nalang. which would cost about the same (75k). she even gets bonus APE.
now theoretically, the ibook should run faster right? but shes insisting of getting the powerbook nalang e. (plus it looks more cool daw)
any suggestion on which to get?

Not so sure bout the complete specs anymore but she is right, i think the powerbook wins it in the "cool" factor.
What are the specs of the 1GHz Powerbook?
Is it the one released in September 2003 and discontinued in April 2004. The DVI model.
If so it should have the following specs:
1.0 Ghz PowerPC
256 MB DDR266 SDRAM (upgraded to 512MB)
40GB Hard Drive
32MB NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200
Combo Drive
AirPort Extreme: optional
BlueTooth Built In
The souped-up iBook has these specs:
1.2GHz Power PC G4
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
30GB Ultra ATA Drive
Combo Drive
AirPort Extreme Built In
No Bluetooth
I think the Powerbook deal is pretty good but the 3 year warranty is also another factor which could really tie both options in a balance.

cool factor aside, i think the souped up ibook would be better since it has a warranty...
something used without a warranty is a risk especially when you're spending 75k!! at least for the same amount you get something with a warranty

Does this unit come with any warrant? If it originally came with 3 years warranty then you got a year and a half left on it. If so then the specs are not that bad. You're friend might want to get an AE card if she's intends to use wi-fi.
But if it does not come with warranty then I think , canuckpuck is right. The specs are pretty much the same. Might as well go with the new ibook. At least you get a full warranty on the iBook. They say the bump up from 1.0 to 1.2Ghz isn't that noticable anyway.
