An even CHEAPER (and legal) alternative to \"Cheap\" Greenhills Software
I use Open Office on both Macs and PCs.
There is no problem translating between platforms and no problems reading, editing and, saving files in MS Office formats. Aside from the regular formats, it can also save files as .pdf (of course, Mac OS X has this built-in, but Windows doesn't, so it's an advantage on that platform)
It's available free at OpenOffice.org.
What's more you can legally install it on as many computers as you want and give away copies to all your friends.

just remember to use the extensions all the times, which are .doc for word, .xls for excel, and .ppt or.pps for powerpoint.

Or you can use NeoOfficeJ

Yep! OpenOffice has its own format, but allows you to choose to save as Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), and PowerPoint (.pps), formats.
All in all I'm perfectly happy with it! And no WORD macro viruses ever.
