    Default Locked files?

I am trying to empty my Trash but some stubborn files just won't disappear! They were locked files (Illustrator) created by a workmate on a different computer. I can't seem to unlock them because when I browse their info, the lock button is disabled. What do I do?

download the utility 'cocktail' from versiontracker.com and use one of its functions to delete your locked files for good. or, boot up in OS9 (if your mac can still do that) and empty your trash from there.

    thanks...cocktail did the trick

but i also tried pressing option as iempty the trash. it worked too. funny how i used to think that there was a key combination in deleting locked files (that's how it worked in OS 9 isn't it?).

    thanks guys.

In OS9 and below, you can unlock locked files by single-clicking or highlighting the file, then choose Get Info from the File Menu and if the check box called Locked is checked, then you just simply uncheck it and then it's unlocked. I'm not a user of OS X so I wouldn't know if that's still the case under the new system.

But I do hope this helps somehow.

Yes Jughead, that works too! But I had this peculiar case in OS X where I can't unlock the file since the button that should allow me to do that is disabled (yun bang parang grayed out siya o parang ghost image lang). In OS 9, you can actually empty the Trash even without unlocking the files first.

in line with this, i have a dilemma to share...

i usually transfer big files from one computer to another (pc and mac) with cdrws.. the problem is, after i copy them to my ibook, i cant delete, edit, rename or move files and folders to different folders (new or have been existing in my ibook)

what i tend to do is i copy all the copied files in a different location in my ibook, i delete the first copy and edit the second copy.. this is so hassle... the other thing i do is a type my password everytime an authentication box appears when i want to do a copied file... hassle din.

i think there is an easier way that i don't know yet... help pls...

second, can i unlock many files at the same time? tia

Yes indeed... is there a way of unlocking several files all at the same time?

reysantos: those Illustrator files were created by a Mac machine.

Select all the files in question (Shift-Click/Command-Click), do a "Get Info" (Command-I), then uncheck "Locked" in the Multiple Item Info window.

If the checkbox is grayed out, then the files are probably created and "owned" by another user/account. Just modify the "Ownership & Permissions" settings to give you read & write access.
