Good on him! I think it is something that everyone can use.
There was a time when there used to be a few pretty good search engines out there. Now, there is really only Google. If they build and maintain it right, then it could very well be a great alternative, regardless of who built it or from whose evil empire it spawned.
Lets hope that they keep the thing going and keep improving the system.
On an off tangent note, has anyone used Yehey! recently? It sucks! At least in my recent experience. Lets hope this MSN venture doesnt suffer the fate of the others.
UPDATE: I just checked it out. And obviously the reason why Elbert drew a bit of attention to this launch is the Desktop search feature! Based on the Flash demo, there is a plugin installed on the desktop, and all you have to do is type in a keyword for a file on your computer, and BOOM! (hehehe), the relevant items appear.
Call them copiers or whatever, but I think that its a great thing for us Mac users that need to use PCs for work or whatever. One of the things I am still trying to unlearn from PC is to look for files using the old directory structure in my head and just use Search from the finder. If they successfully implement this on PC, then it just makes my full transition easier. That way, I'll be fully prepared for Spotlight!
I just hope that the desktop plugin doesnt come with good old Windows spyware.

I tried to do a search for "purple highlights" on msn.com and got an error: "beta.search.msn.com not found." Does this happen to anyone else? (Do I need to install a patch on my system perhaps? Or buy a license first before I can do a search?)
Also, doesn't Google do this already? I've had Google Desktop Search on my PC for some time now and it works perfectly fine.
