try to go to disk utility and format it to mac os extended if your only going to use it with mac computers or fat32 if your using it to mac and pc computers.

the mac cant detect it. it wont mount. do i have to set the external HD to master?
if i have to...how? the enclosure bought dont have the cable necessary to do the master slave thing.

the HD is seagate and the enclosure is a cheap looking Mobile Disk

I dont want to presume so please clarify your external hard disk in terms of
    1. Size:
    a. the standard 3.5 inch seagate (used for desktops)
    or
    b. the 2" size used for laptops?

    2. Is it cable powered or you need an external power source? If you are using USB you most likely need one.
If FW it might not need one. It will also depend on your enclosure too.

    3. If that is a seagate, what is the capacity? check the jumper settings

It could be your jumper settings. If you don't know, simply yank all the jumpers out.

Are you sure your enclosure is mac compatible? Because not all are.

I do have a MObile Disk. It's actually a generic one (no Oxford Chipset) but it could work with a Mac. Most issues related to your problem is the size. Sometimes, 160GB is the maximum size. Sometimes, even if you have a 200GB drive, it would only mount as a 120GB or 160GB.

Have you tried running disk utility already to mount your HD? Doesn't mount yet?
