    Default ibook\'s busted hard drive

my ibook crashed (eternally spinning beach ball then wouldn't restart) a few days ago and brought it to powermac. i thought they would just have to re-install. yesterday, they told me that the problem is with my hard drive. got it end of 2003 so no warranty anymore. they said that have to get new one.

feel really bad. told them to piece it back together first so i can take it home. i don't know why since i wouldn't know what to do with it myself anyway. should i get second opinion or am i just being silly?

i think i'm in denial. i should be looking for a new hard drive. paging, ditoy(?)

i guess you should. and don't take it home yet, just leave it there and have them put a new one in while it's open. a hard drive will set you back, oh, 5-6 thou? and installation will be 1.5K.

another good argument for investing in an external firewire drive--both for backup, and also for trying to rescue/reformat your old drive by using the external as a startup disk. (i know, we always think about these things too late --learned that the hard ay myself.)
