ez, if there's a monitor icon on the menu bar you can click it and choose a resolution that fits you. If not, just ask your admin to enable "show display on menu bar" in the Display sys prefs. I really don't see why this has to be restricted though.

I'm stumped. How is screen resolution prefs locked by an admin?

exactly. before they upgraded the rest of the macs in our lab to OS X we requested that they leave the Display Prefs unlocked. But they didnt and still locked it.
Also, the reason i asked this [the subject] is beacause before when i was using the Win platform, even though control panel is disabled, there was this little app that when launched sits on the taskbar and allow you to scroll on different screen rez the monitor/card supports.
But then again, there wont be any other work around on this, right? except to have it unlocked?

Have you tried System Prefs>Displays (check show displays in menu bar)?
Unless maybe through geeky commands in the terminal, I failed to disable the show display in menu bar pref in the system prefs.

If that little app uses a little monitor as an icon AFAIK it not really an app but similar to a shortcut to your monitor settings in the control panel. It's basically the same implementation with OSX with the monitor icon on the menu bar. Of course you can still check versiontracker.com.
