Default BIG-3 PC makers want to license OS X

Steve Jobs recently granted an interview to Fortune magazine and revealed lots of interesting tidbits including this: "Most tantalizing of all is scuttlebutt that three of the biggest PC makers are wooing Jobs to let them license OS X and adapt it to computers built around standard Intel chips. Why? They want to offer customers, many of whom are sick of the security problems that go with Windows and tired of waiting for Longhorn, an alternative."

Other interesting tidbit: In 1998 Apple asked Adobe to develop a mac version of Premier. They declined and because of that Apple created it's own Applications Software Division responsible for our much loved iLife, FCP etc.

Unless you don't subscribe to Fortune online you can't read the entire article. But here's a link to that article.

Also some summaries on these sites:

sweet! But isn't this unlikely? Seem to remember reading somewhere that Apple gets a lot of its revenues from hardware compared to software? Not to mention how long it would take to actually get OSX optimized for x86 procs?

Well if it does happen then that would be really great news

Who knows. Apple made so much noise last year I'm sure this year will be even better.

Cguro hindi siya papayag ilicense yon. I think OSX is what really sets Apple apart from the rest (when it comes to "computing" ) ... not really the hardware. Having that licensed is risky because what if Intel makes the better hardware, and the PC market is generally cheaper cuz of the options available. So licensing/porting OSX to that (if successful) can eat Apple alive since you'll have the best of both worlds in the PC environment na.

Of course the whole "design/pogi factor" is still all Apple hehehe... unless payagan niyia ilicense din designs nila hehehe.

But simply put, they're still not market leaders, so why would Jobs consider sharing one of the "edges" Apple has of gaining more market share.

Then again, they'd have an easier time trying to overtake MS in the OS department if they made OS X available for everyone on the most common hardware platforms... so maybe it aint such a bad deal after all.

There was a Mac version of Adobe Premiere (umabot pa sa version 6.5) before Adobe decided to discontinue its development back in July 2003.

This is definitely true, I've used Premiere on my Mac already before. I guess what Apple was looking for was something for Adobe to develop exclusively for the Mac. A whole new software program just for the Mac. :2cents:

i remember some years ago, they actually did license the mac os to 3rd party hardware makers (i think there were 2-3 mac clones) but this didnt take off as expected. Anyone here owns one of those old mac clones? That was still in the era of the beige boxes.
