Default Apple 1 to 1 in the Ateneo High School

Guys, do you think that the Ateneo de Manila High School can adopt this method of teaching? I'm a student in the Ateneo High and I wish that they'd think about doing 1 is to 1 teaching with Apple iBooks.

For those who don't know about it: Click here

Here in the Ateneo, all the classrooms of the fourth-years are equipped with an LCD projector and if I'm not mistaken a black AV Receiver (the one used in home theaters) which are both caged in metal with locks to avoid theft. It was donated by Manny Pangilinan (ata). Problem is, the lower levels (Freshmen to Juniors) don't have it yet or probably the Ateneo hasn't installed them yet. Probably these two things can help in the integration of the Apple 1 to 1 project if ever the Ateneo proceeds in adopting it.

Most likely, the Ateneo will increase the tuition fees by a stupefying rate but I don't think that it would be a problem for me. <A lot of Ateneans would probably quit because of this>

Simplicity of Lifestyle - That's what all the teachers say

I think that this move can really heighten up our grades and give us an edge against the other schools in the country. <We'd probably be the first>

The researches regarding this topic are convincing.

Is there anyone here in PhilMUG who can inform the proper authorities in the Ateneo High School about this?

    A real long shot A.J.

Maybe a PC equivalent set-up might be more believable, hardware wise.

And what about the educational materials available ?? You can't just bring in all the programs etc., and transplant it here in the Philippines. It would be too "Yankee oriented". Besides, it would have to be approved by the DpEd !!

That is even a longer shot!

As one who has grown up looking/dreaming of what is in America ... dreaming is free

    Cheers,

AJ, this idea of Apple 1 to 1 learning is even a long shot in most colleges in the USA. Unless all this is donated by some pro-apple billionaire, Apple 1 to 1 learning is still a dream for many schools.

I wonder.. maybe Steve Jobs can get around to donating a good bunch of iBooks to Reed College (where he attended college).

I remember Bill Gates donating Palm Tungsten T units in a New York school instead of his PPCs.:P

Personally, I think that if ever such a program were to be considered, it would be much more effective to deploy it to college-level classes. At high school level, I think there are far too many other elements that need addressing before 1:1 computers, like quality of some teachers and some curricula. Furthermore I figure that the ratio of "intellectually-challenged" individuals will be lower at higher levels of education. At high school level, they might be too distracted by everything the technology allows and in fact won't benefit much from an educational standpoint.

And as you mention, if this prompts Ateneo to increase tuition rates--and its rates are already quite high--I really think that the cost-benefit ratio would be unacceptably high to both the school and the parents.

    My two cents!

which reminds me of my recent talk with my former fine arts professor, i was struck when he informed me they are still using the older version of Adobe Photoshop 5.0 for instructions...

yay! that was four years ago.

Unfortunately, cost alone will be extremely prohibitive. Even at educational/volume discount pricing, the base iBook price is still far too high to accomodate a 1:1 ratio with students. So much so that it would be MUCH better to put that money to good use elsewhere.

For my part, though I believe that the computer is a great learning tool AND an essential one these days, I notice that too many people have gotten lazy to the point of relying only on Google, electronic encyclopedias, and other online material. High-speed Internet and a proliferation of websites make it extremely convenient to get the latest news and information, but this also promotes laziness, which could lead to plagiarism. How many are already at fault for simply copying-and-pasting without due acknowledgement, or worse, thinking that something posted on the Internet is taken to be credible. The 1:1 program could certainly promote this behavior. I'm not one to "punish everyone for the sins of one," but this is one issue that has to be resolved.

I think a much more acceptable solution, overall, would just be to provide more terminals on campus. As it is, there aren't enough, and so only the "privileged" don't have to worry since they have PCs at home.

apple 1 to 1 in ateneo?!?! p**eta! i remember when i was still studying basic programming in the grade school and wordstar in highschool!

good luck. new curriculums lang nga in the college, hirap na hirap akong magpass, this kind pa (with monetary involvement to boot).

yeah, i agree with gino ledesma. train your students to become computer savvy, not computer slaves. realize that the computer is a tool, not a master that you need. students should learn, side by side with WiFi and iPods, the beauty of the written word, the joys of a written journal, and the value of the dewey decimal system.

    =)

That Spanish expletive doesn't seem appropriate in this forum. If only you knew what that really meant !!

This is a bit of a late reply.

But from my experience working in a school, I believe the focus should be on creating the Computer based training materials that will run on the computers, rather than the computers themselves.

Groups like PhilMUG and OSSA-PH (Open Source Software Association) should ensure that whatever materials are developed are viewable on any computing platform and not tied to any single platform. E.g. HTML, .pdf formats, instead of .ppt or keynote formats.

I personally prefer HTML because these can be accessed from any web enabled computer. I'm not too keen on providing a computer per student, because t would tend to limit the audience to those who can afford them. I've always been a proponent of computer rental facilities since it is afordable to more people

Even a rich country like the US cannot afford 1 to 1. Even for them it is an ideal. In the Philippines, some students can afford it, most can't afford it, many others can afford it, but there may be better things for them to spend their money on.
