    Default Why Switch?

    Hello all,
Rather than wait to get the occasional calls for help to educate pc users to switch, I think it makes sense to have a more complete thread on why to switch to Mac. Please add your favorite links and a short intro paragraph or 2. Let me start off with these gems:

Mac Loyalists: Don't Tread on Us
There are 25 million people around the world who use Macintosh computers, according to Apple. But unlike ordinary personal computers, people don't simply use Macs, they become fans. They develop a passion for the machines, which can sometimes turn into an obsession.

Defending Windows over Mac a sign of mental illness
“In relationships with an abuser or controller, the victim has also experienced a loss of self-esteem, self-confidence, and psychological energy. The victim may feel ‘burned out’ and too depressed to leave.”

“Stockholm Syndrome produces an unhealthy bond with the controller and abuser. It is the reason many victims continue to support an abuser after the relationship is over. It's also the reason they continue to see ‘the good side’ of an abusive [situation] and appear sympathetic to someone who has… abused them.”

That's a double-edged sword though. Healthy passion is okay, but some people are so obsessed with one platform and so intolerant of another that they're rightly called bigots. IMHO, Mac bigots are just as bad as their Wintel PC equivalents. They're one of the reasons why many people perceive Mac users in a negative light. Snobbish, elitist, etc.

If I'm a Wintel PC user and I've got a Mac bigot forcing me to switch 'coz the Windows platform is bad and how much more superior the Mac platform is and Wintel PC users are stupid and Mac users are smarter, etc. etc., I'll tell him to f*ck off and won't ever take another look at the Mac platform. :-)

As far as I'm concerned, hard-sell tactics are a big turn-off and should be avoided.

    Just my opinion.

Sure, hard sell tactics are a turnoff and that goes for trying to inflict religion on someone or selling laundry detergent. Then again there are also windoze nazis (who enjoy all the crap they're getting from the evil empire) and try to make people follow their "norm". A balance is necessary.

Anyways, do add your "reasons to switch" URLs to this thread so we can help potential switchers see the light.

Have you tried installing windows xp? installation is also easy but after connecting thru the net and inspecting how many adwares and spywares you have you'll be surprise. Not to count out the viruses especially the trojans that you get. You spend more maintaining your system to get rid of the bugs and hoping you don't get another formatting and reinstalling

I do more photo and video work on my Mac and suffer far less downtime (never) compared to Windows 95, 95SE, ME, and 2000 (I quit Windows after 2000).

I also spend less time on my Mac compared to the Windows boxes. If you can get your work done using Mandrake or Redhat linux, that's what I would recommend if you can't plop down the cash for a Mac yet. M$ is the debil and makes the Baby Jeebus cry.

This may be the most sensible place to begin when switching.

    macs just work.

try doing that with your windows (for a while there i was tempted to say 'wintel')

... and even pc users acknowledge the mac advantage...

Here's a practical guide to switching.

I recently had to return to Windows while I was transitioning from an ibook to a powerbook. It was, to say the least, irritating.
    1) Setting up XP to get it the way I wanted it took me a whole day. This was partly because I got used to the ease of a mac, but also more because the interface and control panel are counter-intuitive.
    2) Error messages would pop up every now and then even if I hadn't changed anything.
    3) Windows has a "safely" add or remove programs command. It isn't all that safe.
I deleted one program and the speaker driver disappeared.
    4) And as gasman already mentioned, XP appears to have adware that you can't delete without messing up your PC's innards.

It's only human nature to be passionate about the things that we all cherish and love!

And you've got to hand it to a Mac user that could invite other people to try-out the famous GUI ease-of-use of the Mac, intelligently inform them about the pros and cons of using the Mac platform, and effectively convince them to finally switch over & embrace the Mac OS wholeheartedly.

I believe this is what truly seperates the Mac from Windows PC users: the Mac wasn't forced on us, we embraced it; while Windows was more often than not, a requirement only!

One concern windows users have is file conversion--at least, that's what they tell me when I rave about my mac. I had no problems with the document files and such. The email and address book from Outlook / Outlook express to Entourage / Apple Mail conversion was a bit tedius, though quite effective. Things have apparently gotten easier.

Here's one article and here's another.

A second concern is networking, which we didn't have difficulty with at our office. We just plugged in the appropriate numbers and intuitively guessed that windows "gateway" was mac's "router".
