Veteran MacUsers:Need Urgent Help on certain application!!

guys,
i cant browse using safari it shuts down. when i use mail, the application shuts down on certain mails. when i update, the application shuts down. all i can use is the entourage. and explorer. do i have to re-format? what should i do? i need help!!

Hi the_Nong! The first thing is not to panic. Take a few deep breaths. Count to 100. It could be worse -- as long as your Mac isn't emitting actual smoke and flame, you're still in pretty good shape.

Now, if this were to happen to me or one of my clients, the first thing I advise is to create a new user account with Admin privileges. by going to System Preferences > Accounts. Once created, log in as the new user and see if the problems persist.

If they disappear under the new account, then your problem was limited just to your old user account. The quickest way to be rid of the problem is to abandon your old user account and use the new one instead.

If the problems persist under the new account, then you have a system-wide problem. This gets a little trickier. First thing to try: start up with your OS X Installation CD 1 (Insert the CD in your drive, and restart the Mac while keeping the "C" key pressed until you see the gray Apple logo). Once the first installation screen comes up, ignore it -- instead, go to File and run Disk Utility. Repair your disk and permissions. Then reboot from your hard drive and see if that procedure helped any.
