Upgrade to 128 MB ATI Card for Portables?
I was thinking of getting a 15" or 17" Pbook with a 1.5Ghz CPU but thinking whether or not to get the 128MB card or just the 64 MB one for now.
Let's say I do decide to get the 64 MB one for now and decide to upgrade to the 128 MB card later on, is that possible? :wound:

I asked a few of the guys at Mac Edge earlier when I got my first PBook. They confirmed my suspicions. You can only get the 128 MB card when you have it configured before you buy it. If you already have a PBook may it be the latest 1.5 Ghz or lower CPU's (with either the 64 MB or 32 MB cards) then your out of luck.

I think special configurations are BTO built to order in the first place. If the used 64mb video chip has to be replaced for the 128mb one, I don't think Apple will allow this...although I am not sure if its just an add-on chip not full replacement.
Still, I would expect a higher cost since there will be a service charge for upgrading the unit. Just like with hard drive upgrades- it is possible to remove the previous 4200 rpm drive with a 5400 rpm one but you will be left with that old drive and the P1,500 service charge here at Apple Center.
I suggest you just get the upgrade for only $50 additional. Sending it back for the upgrade is downtime too.

Video cards for portables are not easy to replace. Get the 128mb version.

I agree with what Ditoy and Mike said. For an additional cost of only $50, it's a no-brainer. Go for the 128MB version right off the bat. ;-)
