Quicktime PC help
help...
i need to convert some avi files to quicktime on a pc to edit on my mac, quicktime says it doesnt have the needed codec to play the video. is there a utility you guys can recommend for one step avi to qt conversion (windows)?
what's the best compression format for qtmovies? i see a lot on the options pane like sorenson, cinepak, motion jpeg a and b, etc... hopefully one that can fit a 1.5 hr video at 320x240 into on cdr. except mpeg4 it hangs quicktime 6.0.3 on as 9 all the time.
thanks mac heads!

im deeply troubled

if Mpeg 4 crashes, i'd go then for Sorenson Video 4.
most Hollywood movie houses release their trailers using that compression.
as for your PC problem - i can't help.

There are a couple of ways you can do this. However, converting AVIs is a bit tricky because there seems to be many flavors of AVIs out there.
Try using your mac to convert the AVI. Download FFmpegX. Its a bit tricky to install as you have to download 2 other components, but just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.
On the PC side (might work on the mac side too), try opening the AVI using QT Pro for PC. If it opens and plays properly, then you're on the green. You should be able to export it to .mov. If it doesn't open or play, you might want to try installing the DivX or 3ivX codec. Then you should be able to open and export it.
As to compression settings, what's your final output? Is the movie going to be uploaded and streamed from a webserver? If so, sorenson is good at a resolution 320x240, 25 Frames per sec, at a datarate of about 50Kbs. Quality and file size will get better or worse depending on how much you increase/decrease the data rate setting. You can use these settings if the people who are gonna look at your QT movie has broadband connections or playback on HD/CDR, 'cause a 20min video with these settings will yield a 60MB file! Toggling the screen resolution will also affect file size. Also setting the Frames Per Sec to 15 is also good enough for web viewing and produces a smaller file.
Or do you want to make a VCD? If so, I highly recommend using FFmpegX to encode to a standard compliant VCD. The Roxio Toast encoder for iMovie is known to produce very poor results. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to Philmug!

Videohelp.com is a good site for all things video, mostly for PC but also has some Mac tutorials.
