before it was free but the last time i checked, you have to get Yahoo! Mail Plus ($19.99 a year).

It's a little known feature, but some users of Gmail have already received instructions on how to enable their accounts for POP/SMTP access. You may want to consider migrating your YahooMail account to Gmail.

But don't forget, it's not going to be a permanent solution - Gmail might eventually shut the service out, especially if it's not properly documented, they might see it as a security hole. My advice, get an e-mail account from an ISP, it's faster using an e-mail client than a web-based one; and after all, most ISP's have webmail facilities when needed.
Having so many messages, I can't use web-based e-mail, it's too tedious, having to download the entire UI for each message I read.

Another little known fact is that if you sign up for a yahoo mail account from Yahoo UK you get pop3 access for free

I heard about YahooPOP in Versiontracker. Haven't tried it yet. But the way it works is that it uses normal "Web browsing protocols" to access your Yahoo!Mail account.
Wintel users have POP access to free Yahoo!Mail using this same method ever since Yahoo! limited POP to paid accounts.
