    Default Mount

Hi guys I have several questions.

When I download programs for example iBatt they are in .dmg format.

Upon downloading they are mounted (?) as a drive. It appears as a drive on the desktop (pc term ?). From here I can usually run the program. What's the whole deal with mounting? And how come it does not install into the applications directory. I have to mount it everytime I want to use the program.

Also I read on the Apple Insder forum that some people are no longer able to mount their ipod via firewire after updating to 10.3.6. I just updated tonight and i noticed that my ipod only appears on the desktop until after the ipod has been updated with the library. It also does not appear in the left side of the finder window. Is there something wrong? I checked my iTunes preferences and there is no more option to enable disk use. Can someone help me with this also.

i can only answer the first question, (don't have an ipod yet...paging Santa...:P) - after mounting your .dmg you can just drag the application icon (say, iBatt or Limewire..) into your Applications folder (or any folder for that matter), and voila! installed na sya.

actually re: mounting, you just have to use the apps in the .dmg format once (or Disk image in Mac Terms), cuz from there you can "drag and drop" the app to whichever folder you want e.g. Application, Utilities, etc... and it will automatically install itself to the hard drive, from there you can trash the .dmg of that certain app

re: ipod, i don't see the ipod on the finder either. but that doesn't bother me really and my ipod still works. your ipod will always appear whenever you quit and use itunes again. re: disk use... plug in your ipod and go to itunes then right click on the eject button near the ipod icon... it should say "ipod options" you'll see it will be in the Ipod tab and under there two more tabs: Music and General... click on the General and you'll see there two options that includes "Enable disk Use"

there you go... hope i was able to help and clear your mind on these certain mac issues... don't worry i was pretty confuse too, but in time you'll get use to it

.dmg stands for disk image so when you mount one it is like inserting a CD in you computer.
If you have an application you simply drag and drop as the guys mentioned or If it is an installer you follow the enclosed instructions which ussually is double clicking on the icon.

I've been wondering how this whole disk image thing started. What are the advantages of distributing applications as disk images as opposed to directories/folders?

Thanks I was able to do enable disk use. But I still think there is a problem. Now when plugged in my Ipod continues to flash "Do Not Disconnect" even though it has finished updating.

When you enable disk usage you need to eject the iPod manually. Just drag the iPod icon on the desktop to the trash bin. Or in iTunes, hit the eject button beside the iPod in the Source list on the left. Be sure to eject it before disconnecting. I've heard a few iPods getting messed up this because they were disconnected without being ejected. No permanent damage though.
