HeLP!! for some reason I can\'t install stuff!
Hey guys!
I wish my post is more "christmas-sy" but i actually have a problem with my Ibook G4. I bought it pre-owned from another philmugger and he created a new admin user account for me and deleted his own account.
The problem is this: Yesterday, i tried to install my palm desktop software for my T|T and it said that it can't install due to a "System Error: (No access)". i thought it was just the installer of the T|T but then, when i tried to update my Mac OS software from a 10.3.5 to a 10.3.7, it said that i had no permission/authority to write or change the OS or something to that effect... (I used software update)
HEEEELP!!! *panicking now...*
I was actually able to download all the 97.4MB of the update (through dial-up if i might add)... only to find out at the end that i can't install it... and since i used software update... i'll have to do it again once the prob's fixed...
any ideas? i tried resetting the password using MAC OS Disk 1; Repair Permissions (even though i don't know what the hell that was for...); tried taking out my password, but still no cigar... I noticed something though... while i was resetting my account password using the MAC OS Disk 1 i noticed that there was a "System Administrator" account with a short name of (root). I was tempted to reset the password of the System Administrator and change it to the same password as my log-in but i backed out, coz' i might make the situation worse...
ONCE again... HEEEELP!!!
Thanks in advance guys!

well you could try to reformat it. Using the installer and go to disk utility.

I had the same problem recently. I did a reinstall of all my Palm-realted programs, and I encountered the same problem while isntalling Documents To Go. I just installed the upgrade about a month ago, and I had no problems then. I had no problems installing other programs (ShadowPlan, iSiloX).
Weird...

Thanks for the help guys...
ikenn: I don't want to reformat the ibook muna... baka maremedyohan pa... the book comes with a lot of apps na kasi.. sayang naman kung mabubura lahat... the past owner had a lot installed, and the installers of the applications are no longer with him... *sigh*
penmanila: Thanks for the tip... i'll try it later... the thing is, i'm trying to install not only palm docs to go, but also the palm desktop itself... but i'll try your suggestion and give you a heads up...
really thanks guys... hope this works! Keep your fingers crossed!

hi, suigeneris--again, with palm desktop, it's a permissions problem. try doing the permissions thing (giving yourself read&write privileges) at the topmost level--ie, do the get-info on your hard disk (macintosh HD, or whatever it's been renamed to), then click "apply to enclosed items" below. (btw, you should also have done this with the conduits folder--sorry i forgot to tell you that). the beachball willl spin for some time, don't worry. at the end of it, try installing again.

by the way, you can find more help here where the conduit permissions problem is acknowledged and addressed by palmone.

I had that problem, but after gooooogling, I found an app that will solve your problem completey, it's called Pseudo, what you do is, launch pseudo then drag and drop the palm desktop installer in the pseudo window and the installer will launch itself and the permission problem will be ignored.
