dot dat files

hi. i was just wondering why i couldn't copy dot dat files from cds to my computer. also, i can't burn dot dat files from cd to cd-r. what do i need so i can do this? is it because of my burning software? (i use the nero that came with the ezquest boa). or maybe it's just in the settings. what do you think?
