    Default VNC w/ Macs

Anybody have an idea on how I can use my Macs to remotely control a bunch of networked PC's ala VNC? The setup would primarily be used for remote technical assistance.

What software do I need to install on my Macs and on the PC clients and server? I need something that's idiot-proof, since I'll be using it myself. I've read about Apple's Remote Desktop, but I'm not sure if this solution would work w/ PCs.

Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

    Hi Eric,

I use Chicken of the VNC to access our Windows 2000 server running WinVNC, either locally or remotely. No problems whatsoever.

Most of the PeeCees I maintain are already running WinXP and the servers are either Win2K or Win2K3 so I use RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) to control them.

When I was still working as an admin, we used to use Timbuktu to control both Macs and Windows machines. VNC is a good alternative as well.

Can I use any of these softwares (Timbuktu, VNC, Chicken of the VNC or Remote Apple Desktop) to control my Macs over the internet?

If you want to control your Mac using VNC, you'll need to isntall VNC server software. The only one that seems to be working well with Mac OS X is OSXVnc. Performance isn't the best, but it does the job. Apple Remote Desktop is great in speed and features, but its neither cheap nor available for non-Mac clients.

we're using OSXNVC now but our problem is this, "how do we allow a windows pc over the network to control a user account created on my mac without affecting user (administrator) account?" is this possible? 2 users (admin + remote) using the mac all at the same time?

before i tried OSXvnc.. but i prefer using timbuktu...

Timbuktu Pro Remote Desktop for Mac lets you:

    • View the screen of a remote computer or share your screen with remote computers to collaborate, teach, or provide technical support
    • Operate distant Macs as if you were sitting right in front of them
    • Send large files without tying up e-mail
    • Find and connect to other users using Rendezvous
    • Communicate by intercom, text chat, instant message through remote computer access, or now using the popular Skype™ program!

then i installed dropcopy, (see my mouse pointer) )so i can easily transfer files
from one mac to another right into my desktop...

sweet aaaahhhh, the joys of OSX....
