While on the prowl for a free PHP/MySQL ebook, I stumbled upon Scribd. It's like a YouTube for documents. While the concept is not entirely original, the site does work well. Files are not limited to eBooks, there are also PowerPoint files, txt documents, and all manner of gibberish. The site actually feels more like Google Video than YouTube.

A quick search will bring up a list of related documents. Upon selecting the document, it can be saved as PDF (preserving all formatting), plain text, .doc Microsoft Word files, and as an MP3 audio file. Be warned, I tried the .doc exporting and the formatting for some pages was thrown out the window.

Barring any copyright and piracy issues, Sribd does serve a purpose especially in a business setting where collaborators can be on the other side of the planet. It does beat emailing documents. I'm willing to bet that six months from now Scribd will be a Google company.

And, yes, I did find that PHP/MySQL book I've been looking for.

Interesting find. This seems to be worth keeping an eye on.
