Core Duo is the brand name of a type of Dual Core processor in the Intel line. Dual Core is a descriptive name that applies to a processor chip that has two integrated processors on one die.

core 2 duo is 2nd gen dual core chip. difference in practical terms is it is at least 30% faster than the previous gen (pentium d) without bumping up the voltage although this can be done using overclocking software.

The first version of C2d were fabricated using 65 nanometer technology while the latest C2D is thinner using 45 nanometer technology. Not only is it thinner and faster but consumes less power (measured in voltage), which means that it is also cooler despite the perfomance boost. I have a 45 nm C2D (wolfdale) on my peecee rig. 45 is better than 65 because Intel has been able to integrate far more number of transistors.

For the typical consumer, these things doesn't really matter much not unless you are willing to pay the premium to get the best and fastest cpu. But for what?

Right now, Intel is way, way ahead of the curve relative to the applications being developed by software companies. So unless you use a really processor-intensive application, I wouldn't worry about these things. In fact, I'd be more concerned about upgrading memory (RAM) for entertainment or purchasing a faster video card for games than cpu upgrade or both to balance system performance or smooth out bottlenecks.

Brother in law who works for Intel told me Dual Core was the earlier version of Core Duo (which eventually became Core 2 Duo).

Get a Dual Core and load it with 2GB ram, and hey, that's a pretty good system. Lenovo's rock
